Repairs, Repairs, Repairs

The last month has been a rough one for me and my equipment.  The shutter release on my M was sticking, my Canon 70-200 lens started to flair during the midpoint of the range, leaving a milky white vignette at the bottom of the frame, and the shutter speed on my Olympus OMD-1 stopped working (that actually had been going on for a few months).  All three cameras were shipped to the factory authorized repair--none under warranty.

Canon continued do an exemplary job--turning the repair around in 11 days from when I shipped it (1 week from when they received it).  Olympus also showed itself well.  Returning the camera in the same timeframe.

Leica was a bit slower--about 3.5 weeks, but that timeframe is consistent with my experience last year.  Given that Leica is a smaller company, I will take that turn around time.  Since this was the second time I had this problem with the M, they did not charge me.  Thank you Leica.

I also needed to get a 43mm Schneider lens repaired--the connection was not connecting.  I found the authorized factory repair service in Niles, Illinois (a Chicago suburb).  I drove out there last Friday and he repaired it on the spot.  Bob Atkins at Precision Camera works.  He specializes in film cameras--handling Arca Swiss, Hasselblad, Linhof, Noblex, and other high-end brands.  Highly recommended.

Knock on wood, everything is working now.

  • 3 weeks later...

I personally hand delivered my Leica Monochrom (CCD version), and a 50mm LUX ASPH lens to the Allendale, N.J. Leica repair facility a week ago, and I haven't gotten any word from Leica as to the status of their findings.  I've sent equipment in for repairs in the past, and don't quite remember waiting to hear back from anyone, this long.  I just called them, and was not able to talk to a live person; I left a meesage.  I'm wondering if others are having the same experience?  Are they overwhelmed with repairs?

Thanks!
