Advertisement Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Hi twism94, Take a look here need help to ID Leica M6 and Summilux lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
madNbad Posted July 26, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2015 It looks like your uncle used this M6 fairly regularly for a number of years. The body is from a late 1985 production run and the lens is from around 1994. You can find the serial numbers for both the body and the lens from a number of sources on the internet with a simple search. He also added a 1.25 magnifier to the eyepiece to aid with focusing. There are a number of places you can look for as to it's value. The big auction site, KEH, the ads on this forum or even taking it to a local shop. The camera looks, from the photos, to be well used but taken care of. It's a very nice combination with a great lens. You may consider putting a roll of film through it and may surprise yourself into keeping it.
twism94 Posted July 26, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted July 26, 2015 I tried to do research but i am unclear on TTL and 0.72 etc numbers. Any advise?
earleygallery Posted July 26, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 26, 2015 0.72 refers to the (standard) viewfinder magnification. TTL stands for 'Through The Lens' metering. Your M6 has TTL metering but a later model of the M6 was called the M6 TTL as it also had flash metering capability. Confusing for newbies!
madNbad Posted July 26, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 26, 2015 Prior to 1998 there was only the M6. When the TTL version was introduced the original, without the added flash circuit and a slightly different metering system, began being refer to as M6 "Classic". Your camera is an original M6. The viewfinder magnification is now marked in the lower corner of the front viewfinder window. Most original M6s' were produced with the .72 magnification viewfinder. This allows the use of lenses from 28mm to 135mm with six sets of frame lines. The lever on the front will bring up different sets of lines when you change its' position. Later versions of the M6 (a small number of Classics and a somewhat larger number of TTLs') offered either a .58 magnification or a .85. These were intended for users who wanted less magnification in order to see more of the viewfinder (.58) or greater magnification (.85) for more accurate focusing with longer lenses. Your uncle added the 1.25 magnifying eyepiece to assist with focusing. You can remove it from the camera to see what the .72 viewfinder. Looks like. Hope this helps and good luck. earleygallery Posted July 26, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 26, 2015 If you're not a photographer, as you say, you're maybe thinking of selling this kit. If so, sell the body and lens separately, not together. You could sell them via a Leica dealer who offers commission sales - they sell retail and take something like 20% commission. twism94 Posted July 26, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted July 26, 2015 is $3500 good price to sell this beauty with lens? Again i apologize if i am breaking rules of forum. Its just very hard for me to distinguish, there are some any variations.... and i dont want to make mistake.
philipus Posted July 26, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 26, 2015 Unfortunately the forum rules don't permit giving advice on value. But search online shops like Leicashop.com, Reddotcameras, Ffordes, Meister Camera (Hamburg and Berlin), Photografica (Copenhagen), Newoldcamera and you'll get a good overview of prices. For the US there are several dealers too, like Tamarkin, KEH and others. I would not look at eBay completed sales but that may be relevant if you want to try that route. It's impossible to give you a valuation without inspecting the items. The shutter could be faulty. The lens could have fungus. That's why I suggested selling through a dealer, they will give you an honest appraisal and get the market (retail) rate for you. If you want some idea of what these items might be worth, search ebay sold auctions or dealer websites.
