But that's not the subject of this thread.

I guess we're still confused the point your contending. The original quote I made about the lens was a mistake due to a picture of the Summicron being next to a description on the Elmarit which Jaapv corrected. No one here is saying the 40 2.0 is a bad lens.

Given the high regard for the 40 mm focal length, it is odd that Leica last produced such a lens about 40 years ago.

The lack of frame lines is a minor inconvenience.

 

Perhaps Leica will introduce electronic frame lines in a future M camera, capable of accommodating any focal length . . . . 

The only reason they produced the lens was because it was convenient in the concept of the Leica CL. When it came out they made clear that it was not intended for use on an M camera with a disclaimer about focusing accuracy.

I have both lenses. A 35mm f2 (V2) and a Rokkor 40mm f2 (exactly the same as the Leitz Summicron). I like them both and they perform about the same. However, the 40mm flares more, to the point of being a real flaw, but only when shooting directly into a light source.  It's a very good lens otherwise. The V2 Summicron is an okay lens. Mine is clean and sharp, but does exhibit a bit of glow wide open.

I'm told that the later 40mm Rokkors that were made for the CLE don't exhibit as much flare because they have better and more modern coatings. Mine is the older model. You can tell the newer models with the better coatings by the serial number location. The later lenses have the serial number on the body of the lens rather than on the front.

I also have the 35mm f2 (V4) which is superior to both of the other lenses by a wide margin, but still keeps it's classic rendering. If you can afford it, the V4 is the lens to get. The German made lenses are made with fewer plastic interior parts and is considered to be better than the Canadian lens in that regard.

I filed the mount lug on my 40mm lens to bring up the 35mm lines. I find that the 35mm lines are much more accurate for that lens than the 50mm lines.

Six year old post, Jaap, and ‘algrove’ hasn’t posted on the forum since 2019. But Erwin would have been pleased.
