JoanP Posted July 19, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK, here's my dilemma. I am wanting a 2nd body to pair with my silver M240. A dealer has a "mint" M-P (240 silver version) with a 1 year Leica warranty for approximately $5800 and a brand new black M240 with 2 year Leica warranty for approximately $5400. I like the idea of getting the M-P upgrade, however I'm not sure it's really worth it as I've never had an issue with buffer limit, never had a frame-line selector and can buy a Schott glass LCS protector for about $50.00. Just curious which one you would select. I definitely want to get at least a year warranty as I've already had to send my 240 in for a repair in which they replaced electronic circuit board. Since getting it back from repair it has worked perfectly and I love it. Thanks for any helpful comments you may offer. Joan
Advertisement Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Hi JoanP, Take a look here New M240 vs "Mint" 240MP for similar price?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rafikiphoto Posted July 19, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 19, 2015 From what you say I'd go with the 'new' one. I guess it's a demo model at that price?
Bill Livingston Posted July 19, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 19, 2015 Whilst I completely understand your points regarding the 'upgrades' the M-P version offers, I chose an M-P because I loved the simplicity of how it looks... no red 'Leica' dot - and the Leica script on the top plate. That Leica script makes it look and feel like more traditional and I have always loved the look of the M4... so my reasons are cosmetic only... It would also mean that you could identify each camera instantly if you had each one set differently in the menu... (but that's probably scraping the barrel for additional reasons - I just love the look! )
JoanP Posted July 19, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted July 19, 2015 The dealer (popflash) has the new one listed as "new" with full 2 year warranty. The Mint M-P has a 1 year warranty and I think that is the demo model.
Bill Livingston Posted July 19, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 19, 2015 The M-P may also get you a better resale price later on...
rafikiphoto Posted July 19, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 19, 2015 Adorama are showing a demo for $5399 so the Popflash price is excellent for a brand new unused unit. I don't know their reputation. Could there be any chance it's a grey import?
JoanP Posted July 19, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted July 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I do think about the higher resale value for the M-P and I like the idea of the frame lever, and the other upgrades. I also, am fond of the silver version as I think it wears better unless a person is going for the "Lenny Kravitz" look. The 2 year warranty on the new one is what's really compelling since I already had to use the repair service on 240.
JoanP Posted July 19, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted July 19, 2015 Also, it's such a good price on a new one.
JoanP Posted July 19, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted July 19, 2015 I probably should just wait and call them on Monday and find out more about the "new" one and see how they can offer it at such a lower price. I bought my silver M240 last August for $6300 from Popflash so prices have really decreased. Not sure if it's an "import", All I can tell is it says it's "New" with full 2 year Leica warranty. Often grey imports don't have the full manufacturers warranty.
Future2001 Posted July 20, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 20, 2015 I purchased my silver m240 from popflash.com. It's all legit. I verified the warranty with Leica NJ before purchase and have used said warranty after purchase (rangefinder out of alignment and hotshoe stopped working, Leica Dc sent it to Leica NJ who repaired it no quesitons asked) If anyone wants to talk just email me stevenjermainephotography@gmail.com or dm on instagram @5amtoday
Jeff S Posted July 20, 2015 Share #11 Posted July 20, 2015 Popflash is a trustworthy dealer….no concerns. In your situation, especially considering that the M-P 'upgrades' weren't even on your radar, I would opt for the 2 year warranty. Regardless which one you purchase, I always advise folks to carry comprehensive gear insurance to cover everything the warranty doesn't….including any loss or damage, regardless of cause or location. Lots of US options for relatively inexpensive coverage…of course varying by company, location and individual circumstance. Jeff

Jeff S Posted July 20, 2015 Share #13 Posted July 20, 2015 After a disappointing forum exchange, I no longer share my broker information. But I have a separate annual rider to my premium home policy that covers all circumstances (including loss or damage due to my own stupidity) with no deductible, at full replacement values I determine without need for appraisal. These values can rise by up to 50% with no action required on my part if models are discontinued or if replacement costs rise. The premiums are quite reasonable. It pays to shop around, but as I said, policies vary greatly by individual circumstance as well as by company and location. Jeff

indergaard Posted July 21, 2015 Share #15 Posted July 21, 2015 The M-P may also get you a better resale price later on... I don't think so. M9-P's dont sell for more than M9's nowadays... I would get the M240 with 2 years warranty. It IS the same camera. The display on the M240 is very scratch resistant, so I don't see the value of the sapphire glass of the M-P. And you can easily black out the white "M" with a tooth-pick and get a black Leica dot and replace the red one for a few bucks.. The dot is simply glued on, and can easily be twisted off and replaced.. All of this without breaching any warranty from Leica. And it'll almost look exactly the same, except the Leica script on the top plate.
Mornnb Posted July 21, 2015 Share #16 Posted July 21, 2015 That looks better than the M-P! Cleaner. Where did you get the black dot from? They are not easy to find.
Jeff S Posted July 21, 2015 Share #17 Posted July 21, 2015 Where did you get the black dot from? They are not easy to find. In the US from DAG (Don Goldberg). Lots of prior posts on this…a search will likely bring up suppliers elsewhere. Note that the M240 dot is bigger than the M8/M9 dots. Jeff
