asiafish Posted December 18, 2015 Share #21 Posted December 18, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've used both, and for me it is not worth the upgrade in terms of IQ, but may be for the shutter and rangefinder.
Advertisement Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 Hi asiafish, Take a look here Classic M or M246?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Belle123 Posted December 19, 2015 Share #22 Posted December 19, 2015 Would be nice if they come out with a 262 version of the monochrome.
250swb Posted December 20, 2015 Share #23 Posted December 20, 2015 The M246 is better for me, not that I found the MM bad in any way. But the Live View and ability to use a vast number of lenses that were previously restricted makes the difference. Yes the viewfinder is better, but irrelevant really. The wider DR solves the biggest concern with the MM and if blown highlights do occur they aren't as harsh with the M246. The increase in ISO is also very good. I often used the MM at high ISO because of the inherent grainy quality of the image, the M246 is however like using a fine grain film at equivalent high ISO's (say 5000) and goes on to become grainy much higher up the range. But all these thing depend on how you use the camera, or how you would like to use the camera if you could. I often have my M246 on a tripod contemplating the situation, hence Live View is perfect, I did want to reliably go up the focal length range without going stupid, so perfect focus every time is now possible with a 135mm. And I can buy any other good 35mm lens (and there are many that are as good as a Leica lens) at prices far cheaper than a Leica equivalent, so less hand wringing if an experimental focal length goes wrong. Also having owned both an M240 and MM at the same time I never found a conflict in 'the platform' because I never used them both at the same time, I decided what I was doing before leaving home. So an M9 and M246 could work the same way. Steve
Joshua Lowe Posted December 22, 2015 Share #24 Posted December 22, 2015 I already have an M240 so the M246 makes sense for me in that it's an easy transition between the two. Not to mention I can share batteries and most accessories.
Giulio Zanni Posted December 22, 2015 Share #25 Posted December 22, 2015 If you want to do anything else than street photography, live view is priceless
Manolo Laguillo Posted December 25, 2015 Share #26 Posted December 25, 2015 I had the MM, and now have the MM246. The shutter's noise and feeling is much nicer, something that I appreciate a lot. The optical viewfinder is better too. The LCD screen has a higher resolution and is bigger. Having liveview is great. And I like the possibility of making nice B/W movie clips. The 246's buffer is much faster. It is overall a better camera... and there is no risk of sensor corrosion.
seakayaker1 Posted December 31, 2015 Share #27 Posted December 31, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) FWIW - I had a M9 with a bad sensor sitting in the Leica service department in NJ. I took advantage of the upgrade offer and purchased the MP 240. Shortly after that the MM was offered through a dealer with a full warranty with a $3000.00+ discount. I had the extra batteries and accessories for the M9 that I had not sold off and decided to go for the Monochrom. I am quite happy with both cameras and do not find any problems switching between the two of them. The 246 would have been nice but the extra cost was prohibitive for me after spending for the MP 240 upgrade. I would have been happy to keep my M9 but after two separate trips for service and out of my hands for a few months on both occasions I felt it was best to move on. Hopefully you have made a decision by know and you are enjoying a ..........?
JochenSch Posted March 6, 2016 Share #28 Posted March 6, 2016 I bought an M8 for dipping my toes and unavoidable color work and lacked the patience to wait for the 246 release i.e. bought an pre-owned Monochrom towards the end of it's product cycle. I think the M246 would be nice to have, but I'll wait till the 3rd model is out. - Monochroms are technologically outdated at their release, so why rush things? FTR: I resisted the urge to grab a 2nd body right now after figuring out that I'll want higher ISO at least in one of them.
Cyril Jayant Posted March 11, 2016 Share #29 Posted March 11, 2016 I am waiting to get my MM older one and I am sure it'll give me more opportunities to leave my M6 aside and do more B&W photography . I truly believe that is my next M camera ...
