Hi all,

New to the forum having taken the plunge on an X1.

Been intrigued by it for quite a while and as the prices tumbled knew there would be a point when I couldn't refuse. It came when I managed to snag a lovely black X1 for a touch over £300!

Now I've got it was looking to get a case for it. Generally been a fan of half cases on other cameras (too much of a chore otherwise), and was wondering whether there was any consensus on a good case.

Also looking for a decent wrist strap to accompany it (and suggestions gratefully received.

My main query was though, whether people thought a grip added much to the shooting experience.

All the best

Rob

I bought "X" a month ago and very quickly add grip. Because the camera was so tinny compared with Nikon D4s, which I used before, that was almost must to! I feel more secure handling it with one hand, and it gives opportunity to actually handle it with one hand - switching on, controlling exposition compensation, etc. A week ago I added "M" to the gear..., and because of the good experience with "X", I'm intent to put grip also on this camera!

Good to know.

Did you purchase the official grip?

Trying to locate a reasonably priced example is proving difficult, wondering if there are any suitable 3rd party grips.

I always use a Leica grip on my X1; I would not be without it. Cases are very personal. Sometimes my X1 is a companion in a larger kit case; at other times when out on its own I use a Lowepro APEX 100 AW. It will take the X1 with EVF and handgrip fitted. Unzip and it is in action in seconds.

I purchased the official grip, don't know about 3rd parties. As for the officials, they have them in stock in Leica Berlin store.

I have a X2 that came with the original Leica Half case. That is a very fine fit and it protects the camara except on the top.

Since I use a wrist strap (leather, rather stiff) with it, I do not feel any need for a grip. It is securedfor one hand use and the upper part of the strap helps providing grip for my hand on the body.

I went grip less but purchased and use the thumbsup. IMO the thumbsup is essential. It does not add bulk to the camera but gives all the benefits of a grip.

I purchased the Leica wrist strap. IMO that was not worth the price

YMMV

I'm not a big grip fan. I prefer a leather half case for the additional feel and grip it affords. For the X2, I had an Artisan & Artist half case. For the X I have an Arte di Mano. And for the M-P, I use the Leica Protector. All are a perfect fit.

I use the Leica grip on my X2. It makes for much easier and more secure handling, and it adds a bit of weight, which increases inertial stability, an advantage when shooting handheld. It also covers the somewhat fragile door of the battery compartment. (Half cases are not my thing, for a variety of subjective reasons.)

I have the grip but it's never used because it increases the size of the package.

It is effective though and the good point about it covering the battery door hadn't occurred to me.

I also have both official Leica cases..........

the grey Ever Ready Type is just rubbish with the back becoming detached all too often at the wrong moment ( nice slip on case for the Viewfinder though with the handgrip  contained within the main case body ) and the "Transport" case that rips the lens cap off if used.

The one accessory that I use all the time is the automatic lens cap by JJC ( ALC-X1 ) and with that the "Transport" case is usable.

The X1 still has a lens that brings a smile to my face and , although rarely used now , I wouldn't part with it.

Have fun.

Good to hear the automatic lens cap is something you find useful.

I've used them previously on other cameras and have already got one on order for my X1.

Out of interest, how does the auto Lens cap fit on the X1?

For the one I had, you remove the accessory trim ring and screw the auto-open cap in place. Every so often, I found I needed to check that it was snug as it seemed to loosen once in a while. That's it. I had it on the X2 the entire time I owned the camera ... It's not quite as effective as the OEM clip on cap at keeping dust off the lens, I'm sure, but it is very convenient and the dust is easily removed by a puff or two from a hand-bulb blower.
