Ai_Print Posted July 15, 2015 Share #41 Posted July 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) The problem with Leica is once you shoot with one nothing else will give you the same photographic satisfaction despite all the frustrating shortcomings. Be careful what you're getting into. I sometimes wonder based on statements like this if Leica fanatics have given up on other types of photography they once loved to pursue that clearly benefit from a tool other than Leica M. For me the most important metric I use in determining image quality is how powerful the resulting image is, Leica is simply not a superior tool for me, it is one of several. It is possible to find harmony though and not everyone wants 100 camera systems The Leica M operation model is so different that if it provides you with satisfaction it can be a long term dominant relationship for one's photography Under certain circumstances it even prevents GAS It's a often repeated cliche but most of the top cameras are so good these days that it's more your workflow rather then any absolute metrics that determine what you like and what takes the best photos for you
Jeffry Abt Posted July 15, 2015 Share #43 Posted July 15, 2015 From what I read about the Q is that it is a a real "Leica"and first class. So you will not go wrong if you buy the Q. But you may end up up with a M as well.
Robert M Poole Posted July 15, 2015 Share #44 Posted July 15, 2015 Not sure if rental is an option in the UK; nothing had jumped out on Googling.Wilkinson cameras in the North West do rental and refund the cost if you buy. Not sure if that goes for the Q too as stock is hard to get. Leica Manchester (Stephens Premier) will take you out on a test drive if you bring your own SD card. I'm in the same boat at the moment. New Q or used M9 and 50mm ... Going to have a play in Manchester and see if I can get it out of my system.

Loren Posted July 17, 2015 Share #47 Posted July 17, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) What's your reasoning? I find it odd that you would teeter between a Q and an M when you are considering two different focal lengths (28 vs 50).
Robert M Poole Posted July 17, 2015 Share #48 Posted July 17, 2015 I prefer the focal length of the M, plus the ability to add more lenses later, I like the price and rendering of the Q.

Peter H Posted July 17, 2015 Share #50 Posted July 17, 2015 I prefer the focal length of the M, plus the ability to add more lenses later, I like the price and rendering of the Q. What do you mean by "the focal length of the M"? Do you simply mean the ability to choose?
Robert M Poole Posted July 17, 2015 Share #51 Posted July 17, 2015 What do you mean by "the focal length of the M"? Do you simply mean the ability to choose? Sorry, I meant the 50mm I had mentioned earlier. The ability to choose is good but I find it a bit of a drag changing lenses.
sdw Posted July 17, 2015 Share #52 Posted July 17, 2015 Overall I prefer the M. The flexibility of different lenses and shooting experience is superior.
robert blu Posted July 17, 2015 Share #53 Posted July 17, 2015 Two different cameras, from a different perspective I have a similar dilemma...Ms type240 one year old (with one year warranty) are on the market at similar price of a Q, of course you need to add a lens...(in my cased I already have) it depends a lot on shooting styles and preferences, street or classic portraits, reportage or ...years ago I managed to make a good work during a workshop in Prague using only my Leica X1 (36mm Equivalent) even with its flaws, of course adapting the shooting to the tool you have...so one fixed lens camera can be satisfying, personally I sometimes miss the medium-tele opportunity... Why not going for the Q (28-35 should be more than ok) and keep your Olympus with a tele to cover other needs ? robert
Robert M Poole Posted July 21, 2015 Share #54 Posted July 21, 2015 Well I went into Manchester today with the intention of trying a Q but when I got to the Leica store I realised that it was an M that I wanted. The salesman let me take it for a test drive so I went out around the square and attempted some street photography. I've never really been that good at this genre but with the M9 in hand it seemed more natural and I really got into it. I'm a novice so I made the old mistake of not getting close enough plus I'm not used to rangefinders so didn't always nail focus. I really enjoyed shooting with this camera though. I got home and loaded the Jpgs (I should have made sure that the camera was set to RAW I know) and to be honest I wasn't as blown away by the shots as I was hoping. Now, I know that this is mostly down to me and the learning curve of an RF but I expected a wow moment (I think I was expecting too much, I now that a camera doesn't make you a better photog) After a little bit of post processing in LR and once exported to Flickr I was happier with the outcome. I've a lot of thinking to do though... Here is the album of test shots if anyone is interested https://flic.kr/s/aHskgDQJPe

Alan Aurmont Posted July 28, 2015 Share #60 Posted July 28, 2015 Does that link to my Flickr not work? https://flic.kr/s/aHskgDQJPe Now it does. Weird. On first click, I got a 404. As far as sharpness goes, all I can say "wow!" Although it's easier to focus with Summarits, I'm still impressed considering it's your first time using a rangefinder (if I understood you correctly). Can you tell me more as to which focusing technique you used: patch or zone or sheer luck? I'm genuinely curious as I've never used a rangefinder before either. Thanks.
