Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted July 20, 2015 Share #61 Posted July 20, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Never understood why Leica went with the 3:2 small format dimensions in a "medium format" system. Because its like everything else that Leica does..............its the best :)
Advertisement Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Hi Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS, Take a look here Trading in all my Leica M gear for a new Leica S. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dougg Posted July 21, 2015 Share #62 Posted July 21, 2015 To get to 4:3 the sensor dimensions would change only a little. For instance the Pentax 645D sensor is also a Kodak CCD sized 33 x 44 mm, not a lot different from our 30 x 45 mm. A little cropping here and there with either sensor would lead to equally acceptable results IMO. Doug
IWC Doppel Posted July 22, 2015 Share #63 Posted July 22, 2015 Cheers for adding that note..............yesterday was a kind of strange day, I woke up with butterflies in my stomach and just couldn't get it out of my head all the fun times and fantastic pictures I had taken with my Leica M system and why now was I going to give it all up for something I hadn't even held onto. I kept asking Nuk if I was doing the right thing and after about an hour of "yes babes its up to you, if its going to make you happy why not". etc etc ...................to when I guess I started to get her piss@d off she started saying 123 Blur..........meaning when I used to take her picture with the M a lot of the times the files were just not sharp and it was at that point the butterflies went away, we jumped into the car and popped over to Leica in downtown KL and did the dirty deed. The first thing that struck me was holly sh}t look at the size of the viewfinder and man my M lenses looked like thimbles compared to the 70mm. Anyway we made the deal and I just can't be happy enough with what I have. The picture below was a 5 minute snap shot of my wife trying on a jacket for our trip to Scotland in September....................Thank you Leica. You've done it before and I have no doubt you'll do it again....... When the new M comes out, should have kept your lenses. It's fun I guess swapping kit all the time, hope you don't end up waisting too much money...
EoinC Posted July 24, 2015 Share #64 Posted July 24, 2015 ...I am joining a 16 day photo trip to Ethiopia in January to shoot in the Omo valley... I went for a wander around the Omo Valley a few years ago by myself. At one stage I was on a local bus that dumped it's gearbox about 80k's from the closest town in the middle of the day. I was the only paleface onboard, and we all (including Mums with young babies) stood out in the sun for about 5 hrs trying to flag down the occasional passing Landcruiser of Southbound photographers, heading off to emulate Joey L - My impression was that they all sped up when they saw us. Eventually a truck hauling gravel stopped for us, and we made the run up to the next little town, holding on to each other as we tried not to slide off the ever-diminishing gravel mountain. At least Joey L respected the people down there. Enjoy your trip, and don't treat it like a visit to a zoo, as many seem to. It's a wonderful place, with very, very generous people. Be open with them and you'll have a great experience.
Ai_Print Posted August 5, 2015 Share #65 Posted August 5, 2015 My two cents here, since I went through he MF decision a year ago. I got interested in medium format a little less than a year ago when Hasselblad announced the CFV-50c back for the V camera system. I have Hasselblad sending me one to use tomorrow for a project for the next couple weeks, if it works well and I suspect it will, my huge existing Hasselblad kit will enter the realm of my advertising work. My only beef would be not being as close to full frame as I would like, I sell quite a number of darkroom based black and white prints from those fabulous lenses. As for the S, no thanks, no need for it, even though my eyesight is not what it used to be, I can still nail the heck out of focus with my M240 M6, M3.... hoppyman Posted August 6, 2015 Share #66 Posted August 6, 2015 I have no personal experience with the Hasselblad equipment. Absolutely no doubt it is an extremely capable and well accepted system in this tiny market. Not at all sure about the remarks about nailing focus with the S system compared to with the M (typ 240) though. AF is only an option.I have shot maybe 10,000 frames each with my M (typ 240) and the S2. The rangefinder in the M is the best Leica Camera has ever made and when I miss focus it is never the camera's fault. The S bodies have an optional focus screen with split image and microprism collar plus the big bright accurate finder of course.Using that split image is at least as accurate as the M RF in my experience. Put files from the M with my best lenses side by side with the S2 and the Summarits I have and you can see just how good the S system is.

I'm sure the S system is nice but with no film body options, it has little practical worth to me. The M and Hasselblad V system are excellent in this regard, fully capable of hitting the bullet points of the work I do.
hoppyman Posted August 6, 2015 Share #68 Posted August 6, 2015 Oh I don't know your work at all. If you need film back options then of course the S system is not suitable for that purpose. The whole design was intended to be a clean slate approach with no need to accommodate film magazines, contributing to its smaller volume and dSLR like handling. When I go back now and edit scans from the best of my transparency film from my M6/M7 in comparison to the files from the M9 & M (typ 240) with same lenses) its a reminder of how good the digital Ms are. Yet side by side with the S2 files..........

My use of film is strictly for darkroom based black and white prints which make up a quickly rising precentage of my annual income, pretty much my future at this point. Having systems that have equal if not seamless logistical footing in either medium are a big plus for me.
bab Posted August 11, 2015 Share #70 Posted August 11, 2015 Does Leica offer a trade in warranty when you purchase the S 007 for say 6 months if they release a S 008 in December? Or if Leica should issue a press release announcing a new system do they offer a chance to trade back the S for an up grade assuming the new system would be considered an upgraded system? pixie Posted August 12, 2015 Share #71 Posted August 12, 2015 The Leica S2 is a great camera in medium format. I traded in film days for a Pentax 6x7, some lenses. I had used Mamiya Twin Lens C-series for many years doing "model" and adverstising, fashion and publicity. The Mamiya system outstanding, back up service exempelary in South Africa. THe Pentax 6X7 bears a reamkeable symarlarity to the Leica S2. My Pentax fitted every criteria i desired. Rectangular format, lovley 35mm shape but enormous.. Well i hated the camera. It; a good camera, no doubt, but not for me! I still use 35mm Film cameras, Leica M, Pentax, Canon and Nikon. The biggest obstacle was the lens factors..the lack of depth of field! I think you rushed the purchase. Time will tell, but Pentax Medium Format digital is a better system. Anyway enjoy your camera, don't invest to heavily in more lenses. Surely you can crop. One factor, "sharpness" is great on perfect skins. It won't always be that way... The Hasselblad V with Zeiss lenses, plus softar filter, allowed good texture sharpness with diffused skin I worked with a pro using a tethered camera and felt sorry for him.. i used film and happily shot what ever i thought was good. He had to limit each shot as PC could not hold that many files from a Phase One. Frankly not getting good sharpness from an M seems either you don't know the RF or faulty cameras. I have seldom seen Auto Focus as good as a RF focus. .

Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted August 12, 2015 Share #73 Posted August 12, 2015 Interesting, my choice for now Sony A7RII. I wonder though what Leica will come up with next! I just canceled my Sony A7Rii and Baits lenses in anticipation for the new super duper Leica M with AF lenses and all the bells and whistles including the reverse Selfie function :)
k-hawinkler Posted August 12, 2015 Share #74 Posted August 12, 2015 Well, I hope Leica is coming up with something spectacular worth getting! If and when that happens I will have to decide whether to get that camera as well!
