ibogost Posted May 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I could use your help. I'm having the dreaded "dead pixel" line problem on my M8, the only solution to which seems to be to ship the thing back. But I can't seem to make any progress getting in touch with Leica to figure out how. I left a voice message and I got a return call that just gave me an address, nothing more (which I've now lost of course). I emailed the illustrious Robert Fisk a month and a half ago but received no reply. Frankly, I'm not comfortable sending a $4k object out into the ether. Maybe this is no big deal for you pros with tons of equipment, but it is for me. Most manufacturers provide more instruction than just a mailing address. For example, how should I ship this? What do I include, should I ship the whole M8 box or just the body? Is there some kind of tracking or reference number I will get back? How long will it take? I'm not ready to fly off the handle but I do want a fix or a replacement, and I'm not sure why I can't even get enough information to make me feel comfortable shipping the thing. Maybe some of you with more experience can shed some light.
Advertisement Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Hi ibogost, Take a look here Details to ship M8 to Leica USA for repair?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stephengilbert Posted May 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 20, 2007 I'd call again to confirm Leica's preference for shipping. The receptionist will be able to give you the proper address. Packing the camera in its original box is probably the easiest way to make sure it's protected during shipping. Put the Leica box in a bigger box protected with foam peanuts or other shock absorbing material. UPS or Fedex will give you a tracking number when you deliver the package to them which will allow you to track the package on their website, and Leica should send you a receipt when they get the camera. You can insure the package against loss. Ground shipping from Atlanta to NJ is probably three days; you can look it up on the UPS website. I don't know how long Leica takes with fixes, but I'm sure someone will tell you. Steve
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted May 20, 2007 Ian should not be a issue . Just pack the M8 in the inner box that came with it just hold the M8 , take any accessories off including battery and SD , magnifers off and grip also. Than place in a bigger box with well stuffed peanuts. Than put letter inside of your issues and were you purchased and what date also include serial number in the letter . Than put return address on it and phone numbers and such than ship to Leica camera Inc 1 Pearl Court Unit A Allendale , N. J 07401-1610 USA Phone 1 800 222-0118 attn Robert Fisk / Customer Service Now i do this all the time without calling first and ship UPS and track it but if you want to call Robert first than that is okay or e-mail him also at robert.fisk@leicacamerausa.com I would imagine one or two things a new replacement or goes to Germany, my bet a replacement since it deals with the sensor. Also if you have images to show the dead pixels include a CD with them

glenerrolrd Posted May 21, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 21, 2007 Consider USPS Registered Mail with signiture confirmation. I got this advice from a Postal employee...once they sign for it is secure until a Leica employee signs the receipt. This is the method of choice for watch and coin dealers . For $20 you can ship Priority Mail , getting a tracking number, get a signed signiture confirmation and full insurance . Two maximum 3 days ..most of my packages are two days. They don t leave registered mail without a signiture.

losta Posted May 21, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica told me they would pay for shipping on the M8 sent in for repair (they said to put an invoice in the box) though I soon discovered they were 40 minutes away and have been driving my lenses over for coding. I still have yet to get my M8 to them as it is working fine without the upgrade.
