Help - OK, so I'm not a Luddite, but I have lost count of the times that computers have left me feeling that I have learning difficulties!

So I have a tired and ageing Mac G4, and I'm running Photoshop CS1 on someone else's licence so it won't be upgraded until I jump to my own CS3, and I have entered the darkening world of Capture One LE. I have clicked 'Process' on my first trial DNG, what next?

How the hell do I get a TIFF out of that processed file so I can get it into Photoshop?

I feel dumb asking this question, and I suspect that, yet again, the answer will seem obvious when it is answered, But I am stuck! No 'Preferences' window will open, LE's 'Help' tells me that I have to set my 'Process Tool Fields' but not how to bring it up. I have searched the forum and not uncovered a solution.

In simple words free of Geek-yabber please; ...................Help?

Chris,

Go to Pictures/Capture One Default Session/Processed and you will find the TIFF's. If no preferences windows opens, I suspect you have a faulty installation. You will need to re-install and I suspect re-register. The preferences window is on the pull down under Capture One header or it is command - comma.

Wilson - Thank you, I now have sample Tiffs which are opening at 29.5 Mb. [i don't know what the native file size is], but only 8 Bit. I still need to get at those default settings somehow.

The DNG's which come out of the Leica are a semi-compressed 8 bit logarithmic file (see LFI February 07 edition, for a full explanation). These decompress to a TIFF on conversion in whichever RAW editor you are using, which is around 30MB but will still be only 8 bit. You can't get a quart out of a pint pot. I believe you can convert them to 16 bit in Photoshop (CS2 and above) but I don't think you gain anything.

Chris in C1 you should b able to do 16 bit with LE i believe

Guy - Thanks, that is what I would expect but I cannot access the default settings to bring about that change. I am assuming that people are un-compressing the files back into 16 bit Tiff's to get the usual 16 bit advantages, or are they? I've done so much reading before my camera actually turned up that even important nuggets of information on the M8 have suffered brain drain.

Chris,

You can select 16 bit TIFF for your output format in C1 LE. To do that, select the "Process Tool" tab from the strip of icons at the top left of the C1 window (it is the 5th from the left, it shows a small gear). The right pane of that window will have the processing options where you select the output format.

It is not normal that you do not have a Preference pane. Try to repair permissions on your disk and, if that does not work, try to re-install C1 LE.

PM me if you want more detail.

Chris just for future question on C1 always ask with Mac with it because they are different between PC and Mac although we know your on a Mac here it just won't confuse folks . In version 4 they promise to be the same but until than we have this seperation. i have a hard time answering LE questions myself since it is different than the pro version with Mac or PC and I am running Pro

Also Chris you can select your color management try and use something like Prophoto which is a larger gamut space and in PS also set that up in PS so they match plus 16 bit than do all your manipulations and spotting and such than when you go to print or output for press you can in PS convert to Abode RGB. But do all the work in the widest gamut space and 16 bit, this will keep the file intergity without any loss. This is a little advanced stuff but you should work towards this goal. Than for web you convert not assign in PS to srgb. We can get into all that and i do have a thread or two on converting for web and also have a great action for it. That converts, flattens layers, converts to 8 bit jpeg in the sizes most common

Jacques - I am blushing like a silly billy, thank you so much for helping me, I went around in circles trying to figure this out.

Guy - Thank you, yes I'm on Mac. I am familiar with colour space issues and use Joe Holmes' for my working space. LE gives the option of 'Wide Gamut RGB', which I selected; I assume that it is the native wide 'camera colour space' for the M8. Thanks as always for your generous help.

Guy,

I have been outputting from C1LE for Mac in TIFF 16 bit Adobe RGB (1998). ProPhoto is not a listed profile on the process window and I have just done a Spotlight search in case it was hiding elsewhere but it wasn't. What I am not sure I understand is that if the input DNG file only contains 8 bits of colour information, am I gaining anything by outputting in 16 bit i.e. does C1 just interpolate the intermediate colours. Unfortunately I am still using PSE4, albeit upgraded with Hidden Powers. It only seems to allow Adobe RGB or sRGB as colour spaces. I think I will have to upgrade to CS3 sooner rather than later.

Because they are 8 bit non-linear once decompressed they contain a greater range than 8 bits would normally allow - remember dbx recordings from the 70s?, they worked using similar compression but analogue in their case - so you can convert them to 16 bits.

Thanks Steve yes there really is more data than 8 bits so do go for the 16 bits in C1 at least you will be catching all the color data this way. Now since LE obviously now i see you can't use ProPhoto which is stupid really, okay that is a bone to pick with C1 . I guess Chris the best avenue is go Adobe RGB than still leave the Joesph Holmes profile in PS on and do a automatically convert to it. At least you can work in his space. i use his D-Cam 3.

What color spaces are in LE guys and maybe we can figure a way to add more to it with a little creative cheating

Now there is a trick which having LE loaded folks have downloaded the Pro version and it kicked into there system the extra profiles but not sure it will kick in the extra color spaces and maybe that would work. Otherwise you may have to copy the Prophot color space from Adobe than drop it into the C1 color spaces . Not sure how to do this but i bet there is a way to populate the C1 color profiles . We need a hack artist. LOL

Guy - Thanks, but not a good idea as Adobe RGB is smaller than Joe Holmes. I can't type as fast as you, and am getting a little confused replying to two threads at the same time. LE offers Wide Gamut RGB, as i have mentioned elsewhere. I have selected that, and will bring the file into Joe Holmes colour space when working files in Photoshop. Actually, assigning my Joe Holmes working space is better for me [than converting] as I swap assignations of various Joe Holmes colour profiles when Photoshop working to gain or lose 'colourfulness' as required. JH is a great unsung hero for colour working.

Yes mine come in as Joe Holmes D3 than i would assign more color sat or whatever but interesting i have done less of this withthe M8 which is pretty good saturation wise right out of the normal profile. but you can really put some zing in a file when you assign some of his stuff.

Here is a classic example of that right here the first one is the normal color space D-cam 3 than by assigning his Plus 44 space look at the colors jump off the page now. This is really pumping it up but you can see the effect of this. pretty cool stuff
