skor Posted June 12, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, The datat sheets state that the battery for the Q is BP-DC 12. A search for that model shows that the battery for the V-LUX4 is the same model. But is it really the same battery? On B&H site there are two listings with same model name and specs: 1: BP-DC 12 for Leica Q that costs $190 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1160034-REG/leica_19500_bp_dc_12_lithium_ion_battery.html 2: BP-DC 12 for V-LUX 4 that costs only $79.95 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/894736-REG/Leica_18729_BP_DC12_Lithium_Ion_Battery.html and of course there are third party batteries like the Wasabi Power that you get 2 batteries plus charger for only $30 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wasabi-Power-Battery-2-Pack-and-Charger-for-Leica-BP-DC12-/251621940689?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a95d61dd1 Will the V-Lux battery or the Wasabi batteries will work with the Leica Q? I've ordered the camera but will need extra battery and don't feel like paying $190... Thanks for any input
Advertisement Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Hi skor, Take a look here Leica Q battery. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
-ph- Posted June 12, 2015 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2015 Well, if it has the same Product code, at least the Leica batteries should be the same . But I guess very soon you can read a post of a forum member who tried the alternatives in his Q. I can only say that the battery in the Q is labelled 7.2v 1200 mAh. mahakalaka Posted June 12, 2015 Share #3 Posted June 12, 2015 I bought an extra battery for mine, which they said in the store was the same as in some other Leica camera (can't remember which one, but unfortunately not the M9/MM batteries which I already have a couple of). skor Posted June 12, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted June 12, 2015 thank you all I've ordered the wasabi batteries, not a big risk for $30... We'll see how they'll work when the Q arrives
pappde Posted June 12, 2015 Share #6 Posted June 12, 2015 David Farkas in his review states: "The good news here is that the battery is the same BP-DC12 as the V-Lux (Typ 114) so they are readily available and relatively small." -ph- Posted June 12, 2015 Share #7 Posted June 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think the choice of the battery for the Q is far better than the one of the M240. I never had battery problems with the M9, but I can see that a somewhat larger battery like the Q has is a better choice. However with the M240 battery Leica went over the top - especially considering that the M of all digital cameras should have the lowest battery requirements not requiring any electricity until you take a picture. Archiver Posted June 12, 2015 Share #8 Posted June 12, 2015 Too bad it doesn't use M9 batteries. I've got three, and they cost a pretty penny.
vikasmg Posted June 12, 2015 Share #9 Posted June 12, 2015 I think it's the same battery as the V-Lux. I charged my Q battery in my wife's V-Lux charger - it worked fine and the batteries look identical.

myungkeun Posted July 16, 2015 Share #13 Posted July 16, 2015 Just out of curiosity: Lets assume the camera ceases to function due to the malfunctioning third party battery. How does that affect warranty liability and serviceability? Thank you. Sincerely, Mike
bernie.lcf Posted July 16, 2015 Share #14 Posted July 16, 2015 How does that affect warranty liability and serviceability? 3 aspects: - contractual - as per Leica's terms and conditions - operational - as in technically all these batteries share the same interface: plus, minus, 7.2V - how to prove - as in how is anyone every going to know that someone used a bogus battery (unless it is really obvious)
piran Posted July 16, 2015 Share #15 Posted July 16, 2015 Lets assume the camera ceases to function due to the malfunctioning third party battery. How does that affect warranty liability and serviceability? In addition to bernie.lcf's post: V is V and A is A... Some issues that Leica might baulk at 'covering': * endurance or operational longevity per charge * electrical parameter (V A) fluctuations or stability * lifetime of total charges per battery * leakage damaging the camera * battery overheating damaging the camera * lithium battery fire destroying camera and anything else * size intolerance causing camera damage in/out or loose * Leica charger malfunction w.r.t. to inserted 3rd party items Notwithstanding the above and before my pre-order is even vaguely looking like arriving I've ordered 2 spare batteries and a spare 12Vdc capable charger to keep in the car. Ecaton Posted July 16, 2015 Share #17 Posted July 16, 2015 It is also the same battery as used in the Sigma DP Quattros which are shipped with 2 batteries. Soon used DP2 Quattros can be had for not much more than Leica Q labeled spare batteries .
piran Posted July 16, 2015 Share #18 Posted July 16, 2015 To be honest I would be more worried about the cheap charger catching fire than damage done by the batteries Agreed. The charger looks v. cheap... I'm not intending to attach it to 240Vac mains just to the car's nominal 12Vdc for emergency use out in the field - perhaps after running out of charged up batteries. Quite likely never to be used. Soon used DP2 Quattros can be had for not much more than Leica Q labeled spare batteries . Puzzled me for a moment. How does even a Leica branded spare battery's massively over-the-top price come close to an Audi Quattro car... until a grey cell clicked - Sigma DP not Audi:-)
