Travelling in the Peloponnese with Two M8's and a Renault Twingo

Hi There

Here is a link to a 'summary' of the trip

Springtime - Page 1

All images were processed in Aperture using Eoin's hack, and my own presets.

These are meant to provide a feel for the countryside and coast, and especially the wildflowers - there is no explanation.

If you want to see more, then you can click on the 'home page' where you'll find links to more detailed galleries of each area.

I suppose that if I'd only bought one M8 we could have hired a better car!

I had done a couple of trips with a single M8 before, but this was the first time I'd travelled without an SLR kit, relying just on the Leica.

I took several other lenses, but the core kit was:

2 M8 bodies

WATE (wide angle tri elmar)

MATE (mid angle tri elmar)

90 mm elmarit (not coded)

I also carried:

90 mm macro elmar

50 mm 'cron

15mm CV (not coded)

28 mm 1.9 CV Ultron (not coded)

17" 2Gb Macbook Pro

All coded except where noted - I had filters for the MATE and the 90mm and the 50mm, but quickly decided not to use them.

I found that the best setup was to have the MATE on one body, and the 90mm elmarit on the other - I could fit these, together with the frankenfinder in a Billingham small Hadley bag.

The kit all performed perfectly - it was dusty, but the sensors remained pretty clean, and I didn't need to do any cleaning during the trip.

One point which was relevant using two bodies, is file naming - if you inadvertantly put the card from one body back in the other body and start shooting without reformatting, it's very easy to end up with a number of files bearing the same name. I did this, and was within a second of reformatting a card which I thought I'd downloaded to the computer!

I'm not sure that there is a surefire way around this. I have a mix of Sandisk (black) and Lexar (blue) SD cards, and in the end I created different folder names for each camera, and stick to one colour of card for each camera!

Unlike many around here who started with RF cameras, it's a new development for me, my first 'serious' camera was a Contax 139 slr in about 1970; a month with film and an M6ttl was my introduction to the M8 last November. I think that there is a real distinction between a film rangefinder and a digital rangefinder - I would have found it very hard to do the flower shots with a film rangefinder - framing and exposure issues are quite overcome when it's possible to review images straight away.

Comments on the photos would be very welcome - here are a couple of my favorites, in case you don't have the time or inclination to look at the galleries (hopefully they'll tempt you to look further).

I love the pictures, but here is a question. With two m8s, after reformating each time, did you get the same folder name for each, and was that a problem?

Be nice to be able to distinguish on camera file from another.

Hi David

Yes - but you must comply with the folder naming scheme

My two cameras now have folders called

305LEICA

This produces images like: L3051234.dng

and the other camera is:

505LEICA

this produces images like L5051234.dng

you can change the folder name in your computer, put it back in the camera, take a couple of shots and then reformat the card - it'll carry on with the folder naming.

There is a thread on this somewhere, in fact, it doesn't matter if you mix up the cards between cameras - as long as you format the card each time you put it in the camera.

I'm planning on using 3 for the silver camera, 5 for the black one, and then 05 for the month, which I'll increment at the start of each month.

I hope this helps.

Jono nice shots. On cards just need to get a process that works really good and never change it so you never get confused. I shoot all the same cards but in my little case a shot card gets turned upside down so when i grab a new one. I know exactly what is clean or not

Great shots! But my favorite is the first image, itis simply awesome. The 3-D effect is so palpable. I am leaving for China (Silk Road) tomorrow and for the first time, my M8 and 5 lenses will be my main camera setup. I can't wait....:D

Oh Joshua!

Please can I come too . . . . I'm sure I have a lens you could borrow . . . . . pretty please!

Have a great time - and come back with some wonderful pictures

Johnothan, Thanks for the pointers on File Naming using the computer.

Your photos are great. I particularly enjoy the passageway shots, and challenging lighting situation there. You posted some good results for sure.

Guy...your comment about turning cards upside down is a good system. For me, I find the LOCK switch on the SD card most useful. It is easy to forget it is there! I use this lock switch when the card is full, waiting to be downloaded. Otherwise, the card is ready to use if not locked.

Now if I can just find a good system for to remind me which of my batteries are charged and which are not.

I would like to see Leica put a 'dummy' switch on the battery, as a reminder of the battery's charged status....

Jono,

Nice stuff. #27 (the first of those excerpted here) is also my favorite. I'd love to see a print of that!

#12 (great portrait), #50, and #60 are also fantastic. #76, I have to say, is a bit cruel of you to show just before my dinner. :)

Interesting that of all of those, only one photo ended up black and white. You've got some great color here--just how far on average do you set Aperture's saturation slider?

One reason why I wanted to get all my lenses coded is to see the mix of lenses I used most after a trip. I did this all the time with my Canon gear and it helped enormously in both packing for the next trip and in deciding which lens to buy next. After this trip, what do you think you'll bring on your next?

Jonothan, Thanks for the pointers on File Naming using the computer. Most helpful.

I looked over many of your photos and found the passageway shots with the challenging lighting there, to be my favorites. Your website is a fine colleciton indeed.

Hi Jono,

Love em all but my favourites are those which are sort of 'couleurs trouvees' (oohh aren't I posh) - those fabulous 'found' colour contrasts (bee hives, boats, hoses, oil drums and so on)

Also love the flower/bokeh shots, and the church with blue sky and blue chairs.

A sumptuous feast for a Sunday morning!

Best

Tim

Hi Jonothan,

I love your marmara shot, the one with a little coral, sea and mountain, really a poetic advertising to fly into relaxation soon...

I tried your aperture advice, but this plist thing I don't get. Hope apple feeds us soon with a proper update so impatient computerusers like me also get there. Have been struggling my way through photoshop the last week with a brandnew M8 staring unemployed at me. Have to recover Canon D1 Mark II shots and I can tell you they have magenta as well, especially...in the black parts!

This week I can push her into the corners of my imagination...lets see what is left there..

Go on with your good work!

Cheers,

Harold

I'm glad you liked 12 - Emma is pretty equivocal about it, it's not kind to her complexion, but it is kind to her spirit (blah blah shouldn't be soppy about wife after 25 years!)

50 is fun - glad you noticed, it's not very in your face.

Interesting that of all of those, only one photo ended up black and white. You've got some great color here--just how far on average do you set Aperture's saturation slider?

There are some more black and white ones in the individual galleries, but they seemed to spoil the mood here - I do like black and white, but mostly Greece is about colour for me.

I don't mess with the saturation slider a great deal - mostly these are a result of fiddling with contrast and shadows - it seems less brutal, but I'm old and forgetful, so each day I do something different!

Quite agree - it bugs me that the WATE doesn't put anything in exif if you don't choose the 'with IR' option.

The choices were really pretty good - since we got back I bought a 35mm 'cron (rather on the hoof), and a 75mm 'cron.

I think I'd do pretty much the same again:

WATE

MATE (Medium Angle Tri Elmar)

75 'cron

with the 35 'cron and 50 'cron in the bag - of course, I'd rather have the lux versions, but I do seem to have spent rather a lot in the last 6 months!

thank you for your detailed reply.

Thank you - you're very kind, and I'm REALLY REALLY grateful for the time you put in to give me guidance with these.

Thank you - I'm not sure that the trip was exactly 'relaxed' but if the pictures look like that, I suppose it must be a good thing!

I tried your aperture advice, but this plist thing I don't get. Hope apple feeds us soon with a proper update so impatient computerusers like me also get there.

don't give up - it's really simple, and when you've cracked it, it really is only 10 extra mouse clicks per batch of photos

Good Luck with it all - I'm sure you'll love the M8.

Jono,

On the main digital page I have made a suggestion for how to handle files from multiple cameras. It might be of help to you.

Joe

Hi Joe

Thanks for this - I like to use the camera naming - even if it is rubbish, although I'd be hard put to it to say why. I have, however, got together a decent folder structure so that the M8 files do make sense.

I think that Olympus probably have the best file naming structure (with month etc.).

Good point though.
