Not all SD cards will eject from M8

I've just discovered that 4 out of the 8 Transcend 4GB cards I have will not eject from the M8. They have to be coaxed out with tweezers. The cards are TS4GSD150. I have several ATP and Sandisk cards which do not have this problem, they latch in and eject very easily.

As far as I can tell the critical dimension that's causing the problem is the distance (thickness) from the label side of the card to the surface of the contact strips. On the Transcend cards it's 1.59mm and on the other brands 1.44mm. The difference is easily seen by eye. The 4 cards which will eject tend to do so in a sluggish manner. I've also noticed that the surface of the contacts strips on the Transcend cards is more heavily marked by the socket contacts than the other brands.

The thickness of the Transcend cards is also on the large side, card spec is 32mm x 24mm x 2.1mm. The cards I have are 2.2mm at the contact end.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? I don't relish the thought of having to sand down the surface of the cards. I've already tried removing a card label to see if that would help but without success.

I have 3 of them and had one crash on me.. recovered the files w/ a data recovery software.....otherwise they work great....slooooow cards but i aint shooting the Super Bowl so speed is not an issue.

Some of them are a bit eratic when it comes to downloading them.... sometimes I have to try more than one card reader before they show up on my desktop.

Thanks for the replies.

It looks as if my problem is camera specific. That's unfortunate since the card socket is mounted on one of the main CPU boards. I demonstrated the problem to my dealer who immediately asked were the cards on the supported list - no they're not - so impasse.

Anyway, I've solved the problem for the time being by using 2GB Sandisk cards which eject easily. I don't want to lose the use of a camera which has no other problems. I'll wait until later when it goes to Solms with the Noctilux which needs focus adjustment.

Bob:

I had one of my Transcend cards that didn't pop out as easily. It was caused by a corner of the Label peeling back.

They have a lifetime warranty, try getting them replaced by your dealer or transcend.

There are a lot of counterfeit cards being sold--frequently on eBay. Where did you buy yours? I've been using the 4GB Transcend 150x cards with no problems at all.

I'm very careful about that. They were purchased from www mobymemory.co.uk who specialize in cell 'phone memory, they have a good reputation. I've also registered them on the Transcend site and the serial numbers check out OK, although apparently some fakes now have valid serial numbers. The cards I purchased had consecutive serial numbers.

I have been using Transcend cards on the DMR (2 GB) and the M8 (4Gb 150x) since I bought both (DMR 1.5 years ago and the M8 in November 2006) with nary a problem. I hope this is not a camera specific issue but if so you should be able to get the dealer to work with Leica to replace it. These dimensions should not be so critical!

Keep us posted as to how the dealer and Leica respond

I will do as soon as I return from an impending trip to Australia. I think the problem is specific to my M8. At the moment my concern is to make sure everything is OK including obtaining the correct Leica UV-IR filters. I do have a backup Canon 5D I'll be taking but somehow I prefer the M8 and it's results. :D Thanks,

Bob.
