OK, so now I have my M8...

Whoa! C1 in a somewhat restricted edition comes free with the M8 and runs on both Mac and PC. Since I've used it (Pro version) for the last three years, I find it totally intuitive, but others may differ. It does have the best profiles, and the most choice of profiles, since it conforms to ICC standards in describing color. And there do seem to be some problems with Aperture support still.

C1 is my favorite as well, simply because of the results. I also happen to like the workflow but, then, I've been using it for years. C1 has been very involved with the M8 and their profiles cover M8 files made with and without IR-cut filters.

Cheers,

Sean

I played around with Lightroom for a couple of weeks but I still prefer Capture 1 Pro, maybe it is a matter of comfort than anything else since I have been using C1 Pro for about 4 years. BTW, the camera comes with Capture One LE. I think it is a good start there.... Just make sure you get the most recent profiles though.

Is there any external source for the most recent profiles or are they included in the latest version?

Hi Murray, and welcome to the 'hood!

Aperture will work with the M8 files with a hack, and some very experienced people think it gives better results than Lightroom. The best results come from C1 but the improvement is marginal and C1 is a royal PITA.

Hi Tim,

I don't think C1 is a PITA at all. My wife and I use it all the time for large shoots and small. It just takes some practice to master, I guess.

Cheers,

Sean

Tim, 50 Lux Asph? The per-Asph is still meant to be very good, but hardly something which decides between having lived and not?

Forgive me a little hyperbole! But the 50 Lux Asph, current version, is about the best thing I have ever used...

Best

Tim

As Sean already mentioned, verion 3.7.7 does include the most recent ones. In addition, you can download some alternative profiles from Jaime Roberts (check the sticky thread) and several others active here on this forum.

I know some people find C1 suits their needs and workflow, I just find it really clunky and the only way to save your tinkerings is a massive tiff or a compressed JPEG. I find the non-detructive 'vector style' model of Lightroom or Aperture is quicker and more intuitive, not to mention saving disk space! Also, C1LE with no rotate and with such clunky profile selection is really not on, and yet one gets so little extra for the hugely expensive upgrade.

I also really intensely dislike the previewing and the lack of ability to stop the main window at 100%. But it does give the best results and dislike it though I do, I still use it for tough shots...

Best

I agree with you, Tim. The 50mm Lux ASPH is the best lens in my lineup, for sure. I have not tried the pre-ASPH version though, although I had the 50mm current Summicron and no comparison there but I used that with my Epson R-D1 before I sold both the Summicron and Epson.

Tim's reply is great (better than mine will be).

But I'm going to put in a word for Aperture. It's an apple professional product, and although it's touch and go whether it's better or worse than Lightroom for preparing/editing shots, it's streets ahead for it's organisational and web development features.

However - at present Aperture doesn't officially support the .dng files from the M8. Eoin has worked out a 'hack' for this. It sounds techie and difficult, but after you've set it up, it takes 3 mouse clicks to ready files for Aperture - not a great hardship. It's been made pretty clear that there will be full support later on.

There is a real distinction between Aperture and Lightroom on the one hand, and C1 / Photoshop and all the other Raw converters on the other.

Aperture and Lightroom aren't actually 'converters' at all, the idea is that you import your RAW files, and then any modifications you want are saved in a data file, so that when you look at that RAW file again, the modifications are picked up and applied. This saves a lot of disk organisation and space, and makes the whole workflow much simpler.

Good Luck whatever you choose

Honestly, I'm a little intimidated given the range of answers. Great to get so many responses, but I think the question is not dissimilar to "who is the better team - Chelsea or Man United?" Your either red or blue.

I think I will try C1, simply because it comes bundled with the camera. Then see how things work out for me.

One thing this thread has taught me though, I need a 50/1.4 A! Just the excuse I wanted to go buy one.

Thanks again.

Murray,

If you hang out around Guy then for sure :p . But seriously though, the 50 Summilux ASPH is an awesome lens. As far as the C1 LE that comes bundled with the camera, here is the trick. Download a free trial of the C 1 Pro 3.7.7 that has more M8 profiles. The folder for the profiles is shared between the LE and Pro versions. Even if your trial Pro version is no longer valid, or if you don't want to use the Pro, you still have access to the profiles through your LE that is legitimate.

Have fun with the camera!

Tim, I don't know, I Feel like with the 850 V-Lux1, and images like this shot handheld right out of the box (image 13), I am living, and quite well!

Click the O at top of screen and tell me what I am missing, lol.

Actually, this one may even be better. The detail of her whiskers, whoa, amazing.

I am taking it one step further to the L1, but an M8 is not in my future unless I have a massive Nikon and Nikkor liquidation sale. (2 D2X, D200, D80,16 lenses, lol) You never know, the L1 could pull me deeper into Leica land. We'll see, but I need to be convinced completely. But any way it goes, I'll keep some Nikon gear too for some things.

But I have to admit, coming from a D-Lux3 point and shoot trial, I saw enough good to get to next level after selling my D-Lux3 and taking a 100.00 loss after 2 months. (not to bad, I got to use it too) After I looked at the Chiuaua macro setting shots, I immediately began thinking of the next level. So, I guess I am hooked on the Leica glass. Frankly though, I am having a difficult time deciding to send the V-Lux1 back for credit, after just a few sparkling images it took.

I have Lightroom, having a difficult time adjusting with it. I am a photoshop user, and also have Nikon's Capture NX, but Lightroom, I just don't "get" yet.

After using CS 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0, CS, CSII, and now CSIII, I think it's obvious I'm a photoshop user. :) But I still learn from it, all the time.

I also find C1 very good and it gives a lot of control over the end result. However, it is rather annoying that it does not seem to have any sort of undo facility except to restore back to the original settings for the image.

Hi Doug,

That certainly is a lot of detail (though rather extreme of you to but a Chihuahua just to test the macro setting!) ;-)

But I stand by my original comment! Time for that liquidation sale...

Best

It was stated in another thread that a DNG once processed in Adobe RAW could not later be processed in C1. What about the other way around? Can a C1 processed DNG be later processed through Adobe RAW?

I asked this question again because it did not draw a reply. I'd be grateful for your help.

Chris, probably someone will post a more authoritative answer, but I don't think that C1 stores its changes in the DNG. In other words, it is as pristine after processing as before. Adobe does offer to store the information directly in the DNG in their apps.

Guest guy_mancuso

Actually there was a time if you had a setting in Adobe Raw and opened a DNG that you could not open it in C1. Apparently Adobe raw was putting a XML tag on the DNG. problem is i don't know what setting to disable in Adobe Raw not to do that. maybe a question to ask on the Adobe forum. i know it happened to me and i just don't use Adobe raw anyway

Carsten, Guy, - Thank you. I am playing with files and getting used to the M8 at present, but as I have doubts [and issues] about C1 LE, I am not sure if in the long run Adobe RAW will be the best route for me when the right profiles are in place. Given the doubt in your answers I think I will go cautiously with which files are opened in LE.

Any other responses to my question will be welcomed.
