There's rare, and then there is this

Last weekend the 356 Club held its 'North meets South' California gathering. Nice cars and many friends, but the lasting memory of this event will undoubtedly be this '58 356 Porsche Carrera GT Speedster.

A total of approx. 78,000 356s were produced from '48 through '65, about 5500 of these were Speedsters ( American market only }, with 140 of those being Carrera Speedsters, equipped with the Fuhrmann 4-cam motor, normally found in the 550 Spyders used for racing. The

cars with that motor were among those primarily responsible for earning Porsche the nickname "Giantkillers" back in the day, because these light, nimble little cars frequently won their class and just as often beat much larger displacement machinery through sheer speed and power from their small displacement motors.

Among those 140 Carreras, as all the 4-cam 356s were called, less than 20 GT special lightweight GT Speedsters were produced, lightened, with aluminum hood, doors and engine lid, 80 liter gas tank, upgraded twin plug / twin distributor 4-cam motor and the exquisite steel-centered wheels with alloy rims.

The attached photos represent only the second of these treasures I have ever seen.

Incredible cars, sensational and easily one of the most charming and desirable automobiles ever made in my opinion. The utterly drop dead presence and the deep baritone throb of that sinister looking little red SOB are truly memorable.

If you can find one for sale and want it………be prepared to write a 7-figure check.
