atanabe Posted July 6, 2007 Share #27 Posted July 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can reccomend John Milich's work, he has done an outstanding job in creating custom solutions for our M8 shortfalls. In regards to the 'O' ring and filter solution, it was a $0.38 solution that worked for me. Tape also works, just be careful of the tape goo if you live in hot climates. Velcro strips also work and so does silicon adhesive, match sticks et al. In the end, what works for you works. The reason that the 'O' ring specified in my instruction posting has a tight fit is to prevent the filter from knocking loose in normal handling. The 'O' ring dimensions were specific for a purpose, if I said go out and buy an 'O' ring and fit it over the filter threads, many would be writing complaining that the filters fell out. You can experiment with different ID-OD and thickness for the 'O' rings and come up with your solution. The total cost of experimentation would amount to $2.00 for the various sizes one could purchase at a hardware store. I used an 'O' ring so that I could remove the filter for cleaning. I also chose the 'O' ring over tape because I live in a hot climate and the goo from the tape will leach out of the edges and ruin the matte finish on the inside of the lens hood. So my solution met my needs, now John Milich has come up with a lens hood solution that accomplishes two things, IR filter holder and flare protection. I do not have the CNC mill that John Milich has, so I could not create such an elegant solution, just a simple homegrown one that worked for me with tools available to us all. egibaud Posted July 6, 2007 Share #28 Posted July 6, 2007 I walked into my local micro hardware store here in the Canary Islands... and asked for an O-ring the guy looked at me as if he had seen a UFO :-) Good I had the filter and lens with me... the guy looked at me again.... thought for a while and came back with something that was anything but an O-ring.... it was flat ring, plastic O-ring style material. A bit to high so I cut it in half getting 2 rings for the price of one... and guess what??? it fits perfectly. 5 minutes to get it in + 20 sec to get it out + 10 minutes cleaning my finger prints off the filter LOL + 1 minute to get it back in :-)))) PERFECT So if you cannot find an O-ring, bring the lens and filter along, may be some more guy can sight guess the diameter of your filter and lense WAOOOOOOOOOO Thank you Mr Ferreteria El Peru :-) and thanks for the LTM from our forum adapter expert. Just "rolls" off the filter part and up a bit, but snug on there now. Can someone provide links to the Milich adapter? I run into these threads and never see anyone linking to it. gesper Posted July 7, 2007 Share #30 Posted July 7, 2007 I finally gave up tryng a wide variety of o-rings and went with a double-thickness of gaffers tape. I put a thin o-ring underneath as a spacer so I didnt have to reverse the filter to clear the lens glass. While I bought the Milich adapter for coding purposes. I was reluctant to spend another $150 for the filter/hood mount. That would put me at $450+ for adapters and filter for a $350 lens. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
