Focus

I find that if I hand hold my M240 and precisely align  the two centre oblongs

for precise focus I rarely achieve a focused shot because of camera shake.

Obviously using a tripod avoids that problem but lugging a heavy tripod around is not always

easy if one is out on the streets or in the countryside.

I would be very interested to hear what others do to avoid this problem.

Firstly welcome.  The shot can be focused correctly but unsharp which is what you are thinking is camera shake.  If this is the case it is likely to be a simple to resolve problem with operator technique. Assuming you are not using Liveview, support camera with left hand, elbows in and gentle squeeze, not jab, the shutter. Some wii advocate  gently exhaling as you release shutter. Try a few shots at a high (1/2000) shutter speed to see if that produces a sharp image and work back. A shutter speed equivalent the focal length (e.g. 1/60 for 50mm) should give acceptable results, but highest is always best subject to what you are trying to achieve. Practice and practice some more.

First of all welcome to the forum ,it will answer many of your questions. Camera shake can be reduced substantially by holding and releasing the camera in a correct manner.

Please read this post in the FAQ which you will find in a pinned thread at the top of forum:
