I love the bottom plate. OK, not always the most practical but a strong link with the M line heritage that I for one would not like to see 'designed out'. It is not something you didn't know about before you decided to buy the camera.

pedaes, I ask you kindly to not snip-quote me in such a distorting manner.

Thank you.

I didn't know about the tiny magnet. I checked and damn!! It is TINY !!

Always thought there is a micro switch someplace. I have dropped my M9's plate on the ground in Lego land and I am glad I didn't have to look for the tiny magnet on the ground with people walking all over me. :(

I do like designs inspired by traditions and I love to pretend to load film in a digital camera once in a while to feel good but making the camera unusable after dropping the plate on the ground is not good. There should be two solutions:

1) Change detection mechanism with a micro switch instead of a tiny magnet that does not need to be super glued

2) Have a "cripple" mode in the firmware, where we notify the user but keep the camera functional. It is like "door open" sign in the car but the car still runs.

In a little plastic bag  somewhere next to the wide-angle lens compartment ;)

Jaap, I can totally see your solution oriented optimist attitude. :)

For whatever is worth, I found the following thread two years ago. It suggests that you can even use a bigger magnet from "outside" the plate.
