David,

what do you want to do there? For customer service, or the Leica gallery, you can just turn up. If you want to do one of the tours then try info@leica-camera.com I presume they do them in English.

I did a tour a few years ago, before the M8 and when the Portugal factory was still assembling cameras, so the tour was all about glass.

AFAIK, tours are held relatively infrequently and may or may not be in English. The Leica wall is in the foyer area of the plant, as is the Leica Shop. Interesting, but not a huge amount to see and if I were them, I'd be restricting factory tours, just in case.

I was very fortunate (because of making a film involving the Leica story) to have a very special tour of all the Leica factory facilities: from the original Wetzlar building, to the large Wetzlar factory where the microscopes are still made, to the new factory in Solms. The Solms factory lobby is open to the public where you will find the Leica factory store and the Leica Museum, which is basically a long wall with many beautiful and rare items behind glass. Beyond that a tour can be arranged, usually in groups for the behind the glass tour. This tour is great but for contanimation purposes (things must be kept very clean) it is behind glass. It is a great tour that really illustrates how the cameras and lenses are made by hand. I highly recommend it!

Agreed. The tour is eye-opening and really shows how much thought, care, work, and time goes into each Leica lens. Lenses are made by hand, not on an assembly line. I had an opportunity to take the short tour while I was in Germany for Photokina and the LHSA annual meeting this past fall. I will be returning for a longer, more in-depth tour in a few weeks as part of the Leica/Porsche trip.

The museum is interesting as well. The first prototype 35mm camera (1 of 1), built by Oskar Barnack was brought out of the vault for our LHSA tour. Truly amazing piece of history.

I'm planning to be in Germany in September, just wondering if Wetrzlar/Solms should be on my itinerary. Stuttgart (Mercedes museum) is also a possibility.

Cheers, David
