It is about 87 kilometers from airport at Frankfurt to Solms. How far from there to Leica? good question. There appears to be difficult public transportation to city of Solms two or three train changes. No bus. Car is probably best. several lights from Rome mke Frankfurt an easy trip for me. I am also trying to figure out how to reach LEICA.

Bradley,

I drove there last week, albeit from a slightly different direction. Take the Wetzlar north exit from the A45 which puts you on the B49, after 10 mins or so take the Solms exit (when you come off the B39 follow the sign for 'Burgsolms'). After 1km, at the most, you come to the edge of town, follow the 'Gewerberpark' sign which if memory serves is the first left, when you come to a T junction go right, after a couple of hundred metres you'll see customer service on your right.

They do tours of the factory, which is on a different site in town, but I think you need to book in advance.

I think it is well worth going there personally, it avoids any danger of delays in delivery. They rebuilt my malfunctioning M8 and checked out 2 lenses in 7 days.

You might also visit Wetzlar, which has a historic town centre, and is on your journey route back to Frankfurt...

Hi Brad.

I did the same back in January and had three lenses coded and one of them CLAed as well. See this post for details.

A few things I would strongly recommend:

  • Call them ahead of time. You can imagine they are swamped. They seemed to me more than willing to accommodate me, but I doubt they would have been able to do so unless I had made prior arrangements.
  • It'll take you about 45-60 min from Frankfurt airport to get to Solms. It's a beautiful drive, even if most of it is highway.
  • You do have to make arrangements for the factory tour in Wetzlar

I did the trip in March and left my M8 for the lens upgrade. It is not far, but you have to take a rental car, and cars can be expensive at FRA. You might shop the rental car prices and reserve one before you get there. Make sure you consider the airport charges and taxes as can be expensive. I think you also want to call Leica and check the schedule for that day. I Emailed them and specifically wanted see the factory Leica store, but they had closed it early that day for some reason, and there was no chance they would even let me look inside even though the door was open and everything is in a glass case. I doubt the receptionist would have even let the ghost of Oscar in that day. She was more than adamant. I was really disappointed, but later I realized that the store being closed probably saved me a few thousand dollars. I would make sure the store is open since you can sell all the current products.

Regards,

Kevin in Houston

for sure calling ahead wont hurt, but I didnt (also didnt last time I went there a few years back), nevertheless a technicial was called out to see me and was perfectly relaxed about spending his time listening to my comments and making sure he understood my problems. I think that is just part of the service.

As for opening hours, well I wouldn't expect favours, just like I dont expect sunday shopping (where I live not even saturay afternoon shopping for the most part...)

I also did the trip in March to pick up my upgraded M8, 4 coded lenses, and a 30% discount lens. I took the train from Frankfurt to Wetzlar and a taxi to Solms.

I really have to commend Leica on their service. A Solms Customer Service Rep. was meeting with the Istanbul Leica Dealer and agreed to take all my gear back with him saving me the uncertanity of Turkish Customs. All the work was done on time for me to pick it up and spend a few days in Germany, and also get a few good photos.

sounds great. im hoping to recreate some barnack photos. does wetzlar still have the traditional style buildings or did it not make it through the war? anyone??

Wetzlar survived pretty well during the war. You will find plenty of traditional German architecture and some modernd stuff as well. And obviously every resident recognises the little red dot! I thoroughly enjoyed it there.

Karlitos.
