BerndReini Posted April 14, 2015 Share #2 Posted April 14, 2015 This has got to be the most useless release I have ever seen. Who would buy this adapter and use a $20,000 lens ($30,000 respectively for the Summilux C) that doesn't completely cover a full-frame sensor and shoot video on the M240? From what I have heard, those Leica cine lenses are fantastic - the video capabilities of the M240 are not.
BerndReini Posted April 14, 2015 Share #3 Posted April 14, 2015 Should have read Thorsten's article first. The coverage is actually 33x36mm, which is large for a cine lens, but my original statement is still valid: why would anyone use them on an M? wparsonsgisnet Posted April 14, 2015 Share #5 Posted April 14, 2015 Beauty is its own reason. I, for one, would like to see images from the cine lenses in comparison with the 'cron and 'lux lenses for the M-series cameras.
wparsonsgisnet Posted April 14, 2015 Share #6 Posted April 14, 2015 And ... it definitely takes 2 to tango. I was at a party at the house of a friend who hunts birds and with whom I was speaking about coming along to do some photog. I asked him if his shotgun was well-crafted or just a gun. He said his gun was beautifully crafted, so I said doesn't that always make it more pleasing to use? He said definitely; another guest at his house, who hunts with him, said, "No, they're just guns." Personally, when I use a piece of Leica equipment I get joy from handling it and knowing that it is a beautiful thing in itself. Since 1970, these things have never failed me. So, I'd love to use the cine lenses ....
Joshua Lowe Posted April 14, 2015 Share #7 Posted April 14, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm intrigued. There are plenty of other PL mount lenses in the world besides the Leica Cine lenses. I could see this being useful for location scouting, test shots, pre-vis, and set photography... Overgaard Posted April 14, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted April 14, 2015 If you happen to be around a movie set, the PL adapter makes perfectly sense. Many really nice lenses you can use on your Leica. If you happen to be a director, the Leica M 240 can be used as a directors viewfinder. If like me is a little curious, you could rent a cine lens and mount it on the M240 to see what it would do. A Leica cine lens is in the Noctilux range in terms of price. Though heavier. Some other PL lenses are redicioulous expensive (and unique and nice), so in that context a Leica M 240 and an adapter is peanuts.
BerndReini Posted April 15, 2015 Share #9 Posted April 15, 2015 Yes, you could put a cine lens on an M240, but there are much better alternatives. I can tell you from experience that when you are the one working with the PL lenses, you will not have the time to put them on an M body and take pictures, and if you aren't the one working with the PL lenses, you won't touch them. Production schedules have gotten so tight that there is simply no time for any of this. When I shoot, a set photographer is right next to me trying to get a few quick shots on his Canon DSLR and zoom in while I record the take. The Leica cine lenses are beautiful and the shoots that can afford to use them are run pretty tight these days. My point is that Leica make wonderful lenses, the video capabilities of their cameras will never be a match for them though. There is too much that goes into it, and Leica won't and shouldn't waste their resources on perfecting video recording in their cameras. I will continue doing my location scouting and set stills with my tiny little M lenses.
