As long time M users know, there is a simple way to "cheat" to view the frame lines without preview lever. Try this as your own risk 👻. How the frame lines selection is simple mechanical link, so with one 50mm mounted, the lever (if exist) must be at "noon". Take care to push the lens release button, then turn the lens a very small bit, left or right. If the 50mm lens is pushed toward left (view from behind), 28/90 pair would be seen in VF. Turning to right 35/135 frame lines would show, beware not to turn too far the lens will fall off.

They are mechanical masks and the correct ones show with the lens mounted because there is a slight difference in the size of one of the bayonet lugs for the different lenses. Oh, I remember reading that way back. Thanks for reminding me.

Funny thing is, when the 240 came out one reason I passed on it initially was the lack of a preview lever and my perception that I would constantly need to resort to that kludge workaround. But pretending my M9 had no lever I realized that as a long time M user I could mentally envision the hidden frame line pairs regardless of which ones were presently displayed by the lens attached. So I upgraded to M240s, and by now I no longer consider the selector lever an upgrade. In fact I consider it one more weak link that could malfunction and would need repairing should I ever go so sell the camera.
