Irakly Shanidze Posted May 15, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 15, 2007 I have a vintage 50mm Summilux, and I don't know what is sharp if this lens is not. I would not compare Summilux and Planar based on sharpness, these are two completely different lenses in terms of bokeh and plasticity. 2/50 is probably a bit sharper, but so as a 2/50 Sumicron. Can you explain how did you find Zeiss "just a bit better than Nokton"?. Wide open the difference is huge, but not in sharpness. Planar is "creamy", while Nokton is plain. dseelig Posted May 16, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted May 16, 2007 I find the zeiss sharper from the corners to the center. it is also higher contrast but the sharpness is would I like about it.
lars_bergquist Posted May 16, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 16, 2007 The 50 mm Summilux (# 18445001 and later) is a damned nice lens, which handles flare and internal reflexes far better than even the current Summicron. The present Summilux ASPH is better, by the numbers, but if you like the way the old warhorse draws from 1.4 to about 4.0, then by all means keep it. A couple of issues back two American senior citizens reported in the LHSA magazine Viewfinder from a cruise on the Danube. They carried each one a IIIf with a Summitar lens; and the pictures they published were very nice. To judge from MTF charts, that lens is a poor relation. But the proof of the photography is in the picture. Don't sell older lenses short. The old man from the Age of Meniscus Lenses
