endustry Posted May 15, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted May 15, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, my M8 is now dead after having been updated to 1.102. I followed the firmware update instructions to the letter. The process seemed to go fine. The update completed and the M8 told me to turn the camera off. I did. I turned it back on. Nada. Â If I remove the battery and reinsert it, I can get the meter to work and the shot counter turns on but shows the wrong number of remaining photos. The meter works but the LCD is dead, all menu buttons are dead. Shutter is dead. Â Battery is fine (I tried two) and I also tried two SD cards -- both of which have worked with the camera in the past. It's just dead. Â Can I resolve this by reverting to firmware 1.92? Does anyone have a copy they can email me?

Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 15, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted May 15, 2007 Aaron how old is this and where did you buy it.
endustry Posted May 15, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted May 15, 2007 I've had the M8 since February. I updated it to 1.92 without a problem a few days after it was released. I bought it from CameraWest -- a pretty reliable dealer. Another user is going to email me 1.92 and I hope that reverting to it will resolve the issue. Fingers crossed. thpeters Posted May 15, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted May 15, 2007 1 more dead M8, since last Sunday, bought it in February, did all the draining of the batteries (2) and recharge it, but no result it is still dead. Try also other firmware 1.92 but it's not working either. Â Theo
wparsonsgisnet Posted May 15, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted May 15, 2007 Aaron, following an upgrade, my M8 now requires both a turn-on and a touch of the shutter button. Â Try turning it on and then touching the shutter button. See if the red light winks. Â There are several of us with this "variant" of M8. It's actually a problem with the shutter switch that "needs" to be fixed. In my case, it's gotta really die before I'll let it go. Â Let us know if the shutter touch does it. Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 15, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted May 15, 2007 Aaron i think you got SDS ( Sudden Death Syndrome)at the time you upgraded although the firmware upgrade was not the cause most likely but a transister. Try 1.092 but I am pretty sure it won't help , than call Sean at camera west. See if he can replace it, this one needs to go to Germany.

And I just got my 16-18-21 Tri-Elmarit today, too! I think I will pursue the Leica technical support angle and see about shipping it to Solms. In the meantime, it looks like I'll be testing the WATE out with my M7 and some Velvia. endustry Posted May 15, 2007 Author Share #9  Posted May 15, 2007 Aaaron seriously call Sean first. he maybe able to replace it  One small problem: I replaced the red dot with a black one so the camera has been "altered."
barjohn Posted May 15, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted May 15, 2007 It will go back to Germany anyway so what's a dot among friends. I would try and have it replaced first.

endustry Posted May 15, 2007 Author Share #12 Â Posted May 15, 2007 Aaron, did you try the shutter press? Â Yeah, I tried that and rubbing the batteries against stuff and just about every other trick in the book. Too bad about this camera. It coulda' been a contender. It coulda' been somebody. Â CameraWest is a great dealer but I've had the unit for three months. I dunno if I wanna pass the buck onto them when I knew about all of the M8 problems in advance. I don't regret buying it but I will if it comes back from Solms and breaks down again. I gave my R-D1 to the wife when I got my M8, too. I'll have to see how much she really loves me when I ask for it back. (Temporarily, of course.)

Irakly Shanidze Posted May 15, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted May 15, 2007 my camera did not die, but right after it was upgraded to 1.102, a vertical line five pixel wide became an indispensible part of all images shot at any iso. i send the body to NJ, and today they told me that i wold be getting a replacement. endustry Posted May 16, 2007 Author Share #16 Â Posted May 16, 2007 Excellent news. After leaving the battery out for most of the day, the M8 has returned to the living and even has the new firmware running! Only bummer now is: it's too dark to test out my new WATE! Â Thanks again for all the advice!
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 16, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted May 16, 2007 As the sweat poured down your face . Great news Aaron, really happy to hear it was not SDS. Maybe just a simple case of reconditioning the battery, or maybe the firmware got held up when upgrading. Do keep a eye on it
osera Posted May 16, 2007 Share #18 Â Posted May 16, 2007 ...In the meantime, it looks like I'll be testing the WATE out with my M7 and some Velvia. Â I'm sure glad it came back to life. I wonder what was going on there. But I'm kind of sorry we didn't get to see the results of the WATE with the M7. Maybe I'll try that myself.... barjohn Posted May 16, 2007 Share #20 Â Posted May 16, 2007 I just received my replacement M8 from NJ. It has a lower serial number but looks like new. (The one I sent was also in excellent condition other than the failings) Sensor needed cleaning and firmware was on 1.092. I cleaned the sensor and upgraded and all appears to be well. All of the LEDs have the right readings and the unit turns on with the switch (no shutter press required). I am happy!! I also just got an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 printer and I like what it does with the M8 images.
