The first is really just setting up the second (so you can see what the large cement stones look like from afar).

The second is a close up of one of the cement stones of the Federal Reserve building. The naturally formed cracks in the cement remind me of a city skyline. It took some explaining to a Federal security officer before I could be let go after taking this

Excellent shots, both.

The second image shows spalling. Too much paste is brought to the surface from vibration of the mould, in this case, and when moisture gets underneath the surface and when the moisture freezes........voila! Artwork.

Nice capture!

Amazing knowledge, JD. Thanks for sharing it. I work across the street from this building and I'm around it every day. I believe that this is the only cement panel at eye level around the entire building with this interesting formation. There is another one pretty close to it with similar "spailing' formations although isn't as aesthetically symmetrical.

Thanks again and all the best,

Adam

Poor old limestone and sandstone panels like that, being pretty porous, take a beating from smog and acid rain too. A little extra coating when they were new would have helped them age with more dignity. Did I mention my love for the Federal Government and their wisdom for saving money?

very funny, and insightful. I would add that this building is on Maiden Lane on land that used to be a river cutting across Manhattan and running eastward feeding into the East River. For some reason, this street happens to be chronically windy, much more so that the any of the surrounding streets.
