Lenny Kravitz Edition - cool, pretentious, or hoax?

I'm not a fan of Lenny Kravitz - but hey, that's my problem not his.

To be honest I'm not really a fan of the camera - but hey, that's my problem, and I wouldn't have bought one anyway.

I did take a look of some of Lenny Kravitz's photographs in the new book, and, to be honest, I thought they were rather splendid - interesting to snap the snappers, but more to the point he'd done it well, with humour and skill.

I'm perfectly capable of brassing my M240 without Lenny (or Leica's) help (done it already).

I hope Leica sell these, and use the proceeds to bring out a camera I do want.

Getting cross about it seems rather odd to me - good luck to them!

Probably just a bit annoyed Leica preffered a Lenny edition above a MattMaber edition... ;)

HAHA, there'd be serious questions to ask if that happened.

Seriously though, Im just giving my opinion of his music and position as a celeb, I'm not saying he's a tax evader or murderer. Calm down.

I hardly think you could call hm one of the 20th centuries pioneering musicians, or do you disagree, pray tell?

Apparently, Blackstone wasn't impressed by the Lenny edition, either. :p

Seriously, though. The "special edition-ization" of the M is reminding me of the myriad of special edition watches thrown out by companies like Audemars Piguet to "honor" every Tom, Dick, and Felipe to ever sit behind the wheel for a Formula 1 car.

For a while there AP was spitting out "special" variants of the Royal Oak Offshore every few months.

I'm still wondering why Lenny has to put up with such a beat-up looking camera? Is there somewhere he could send it off to be cleaned up and repainted? How much would that cost? Or how about a DIY solution and buying a pot of aircraft model paint for a few dollars? Imagine his face if he got back home and found someone had "restored" his SE Leica! ;)

You do not know that is true.

.

I don't know if it's true either, but Blackstone is a company that pays its investors out of the profits of the companies into which it buys, and I would be inclined to think they are not impressed by something as efette as a pre-worn camera as an earnings generator. I would think the chances of Blackstone being unhappy with the performance of (frequent) special editions in general are non-trivial. They are not a white knight.

But you are correct; I, and most others here, do not know. However, speculation and rumor are something a closely held yet high profile company must learn to either ignore or address. It's all speculation unless you've seen the books.

The LK edition occurred out side the date of the decision to cut. Or am I wrong? Regardless, your suggestion regarding internal affairs are enough to keep me humble. Gosh only knows what happened. I am not one to speculate.

Let us hope for the better.

I think what happens here (Leica offering a celebrity designed edition of some of their products) is absolutely wonderful.

This has absolutely nothing to do with anyone "not liking" the celebrity or anyone pretentious on this forum to comment how pre-brassed Leica products are pretentious or anyone expressing their dislike about the special editions in general.

I see it this way: a rather traditional company based in Germany has produced well received products over such a long time that indeed customers can be found to pay more money on a special edition set of the companies products.

It is perfectly fine.

I have to admit though - I have my own beef in here - I want this edition to sell well and the 50mm special edition lens in quantity to effect lowering this very lens' second hand market price just that much so I can finally afford it as current samples (unbiased) are veeeeeeery lofty priced.

I too prefer to wear down my own black paint, would not buy this set and have no music from Lenny Kravitz in my library so far.

I would have preferred Leica would have shipped the set with a full ashtray and a top hat instead:

Hi Matt,

I am not sure why the repeated hateful opinion posting about Lenny. It is ok to have an opinion, but three posts full of vitriol makes me wonder what sort of falling-out you and Lenny had?

Here is what you have written in this thread so far: Dismissing him as, "pop light," "pretty much irrelevant," "Jimmy Hendrix clone," "average and unremarkable music," "mediocre guitarist," "mediocre photographer,"minor celeb," "he's really nothing special," "he's a below grad d 'celeb," "largely copied Hendrix's chops," and finally, "could give a shit about this."

You might want to do a little fact checking. Here is the wiki on Lenny Kravitz and I think it will surprise you (or anyone else) to discover Lenny in a little more depth as opposed to what you are painting him as in your three ranting posts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Kravitz

All I can say is that he has more creative and artistic talent than myself based on listening to his music and looking at his photography. I'm surprised you aren't happy to consider him a fellow Leica shooter.

Rick

That was clearly a tongue in cheek comment. To be serious, I would infer that promoting a marketing guy to the CEO role says that Blackstone probably _does_ see more profit in "style" vs. substance. After all, it takes real R&D to engineer better optics, sensors, etc. That's costly. Certainly more costly than limited edition paint jobs and celebrity endorsements.
