Wrong UV/IR filter for M8

I just received my two free filters from Leica. Unfortunately I got a 49mm (13412) instead of a 46mm (13418) which would fit my 35mm Summilux. This was possibly my fault although I don't remember exactly what I ordered (it has been a while). Has anyone experience with swapping? My filters were mailed from Germany but is there a more direct source? Or is anyone interested in an exchange? The 49mm fits 135mm, 75mm teles and the 28-35-50 TriElmars.

Does anyone know if the later Tri-Elmar (focus tab, depth of field scales) needs the slim 49mm if you are going to use the lens hood with it? At the moment I have the older version but am hoping to change it as soon as a new supply of the later coded version becomes available again in the UK.

You do know that there is no optical difference between the first and second version, Bob? It is a bit expensive way to code your lens. Afaik there is no Leica lens that needs a slim filter.

Bob,

The Tri Elmar (second version) took a special thin UV filter supposedly to eliminate vignetting. However, I am using a Leica IR cut filter in 46mm size using a 49>46 step down filter ring on my Tri Elmar and I am not getting any vignetting - so I don't think it is an issue.

Cheers

Howard

Thanks Jaap, I've PM'd you to explain how the older lens is on a kind of loan until my new one arrives.

Thanks Howard, I had a suspicion that was the case. If I have a problem I can always remove the glass and grind down the front of the filter mount.

Leica did have a unique slim UV filter for the newer 28-35-50 TriElmar. However considering that the UV/IR filter is for use on the 1.33 crop M8, no slim filter is needed. The standard Leica 49 UV/IR filter works just fine on my TriElmar and M8.

Best,

Ray

I happened to get the Leica filter converter for WATE filter to 67mm. Right now I put E67 UV on it.

Could anyone help suggest which filter I should use for size E67, as I can't get hold of any E67 UV/IR filter yet. Does Leica indicate when they will ship E67 UV/IR?

Given the shape of the converter, did Leica design it so that it acts as a lens shade as well?

Thanks,

VB

The 135mm f3.4 tele, Leica 11889 takes a 49mm filter. Also the 75mm Summicron, Leica 11637, takes a 49mm filter

Also the 3rd-generation 28mm Elmarit and the early version of the pre-APO 90 Summicron (the one where the lens shade retracts over the aperture scale), along with the first version of the 21mm Elmarit (which did not go into production but several examples of the prototype have surfaced through the years).

The second-generation 28-35-50 Tri-Elmar functions perfectly well (no vignetting) with a standard-mount B+W filter on full-frame film bodies so would be fine on an M8.

Lenses accepting 52mm filters such as the C/V 35mm f/1.2 and 50mm f/1.5, as well as the vintage 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor (in LTM) would more than likely work on the M8 with 52-49mm stepping and their hoods attached.
