Telyt 400mm f/6.8: What I am doing wrong???

Well, it has been snowing very lightly all day.

Perfect condition for my tests with a grey almost white sky, all shot wide open.

Test 1: Sony A7R + Single Adapter: Novoflex R-E + Telyt-R 400/6.8. Normal optical vignetting.

Test 2: Sony A7R + Two Adapters: Novoflex R-M and Novoflex M-E + Telyt-R 400/6.8. The M bayonet between the two adapters obstructs mechanically.

Test 3: Sony A7R + Two Adapters: Leica R-M and Novoflex M-E + Telyt-R 400/6.8. The Leica R-M adapter obstructs mechanically severely.

These results appear to be consistent with

• my earlier post http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/2869218-post14.html that showed vignetting with the Telyt-V,

• the OP's post #1, image 1 and 2,

• the German thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/tier-natur/335230-die-amsel-und-der-nachwuchs.html#post2716370, and

• Luigi's observations. It's also consistent with

• bocaburger's observation that the Leica R-M adapter adds to the mechanical obstruction. And finally with the posts by

wildlightphoto earlier in this thread.

Thanks to all who helped explain the problem.

K-H, Thank you VERY much.

This strikes me as rather disappointing, not so much about the Telyt V, as about the R-M adapter (on this thank you also to bocaburger). Have people observed mechanical vignetting caused by the new R-M adapter with other lenses, especially R-lenses? This would compromise the usefulness of the adapter at best, or the idea of the M as "R Solution" at worst.

Hopefully this is not the case, but I would be interested to know either way.

My vignetting with the M240 and Telyt-V + 14647 + Novoflex LEM/LER vs + 14642 Leica R/M are identical to yours with the A7R Telyt-R so it would seem to indicate the R tube has no advantage over the V tube in this issue. For me the vignetting of the Novoflex is at least livable. Needs almost no cropping, in fact even without cropping it would be covered by a matted print.

So far this is the only lens with that problem, and apparently it existed on the Visoflex also. I never saw it probably because I always shot slides and the slide mount covered the slight corner vignetting. I've got the 70-210/4 R, and a host of Nikkors, and haven't seen the vignetting on them with the 14642 adapter.

Thanks.

Perhaps it is likely to happen also with its bigger sister, the 560mm f/6.8 V? I have this lens but not able to use it currently, as it is being repaired.

According to Luigi it does affect the 560 as well. Given you have both lenses, and they both have their own tripod attachments, I would just get the Novoflex LEM-LER or even a Fotodiox M-R adapter (though I can't speak for the latter, they appear to not have a secondary internal rear baffle) to use with those lenses. I had the Novoflex originally and go the Leica one because I wanted the tripod attachment for heavier lenses. I planned on selling the Novoflex but now that I discovered this vignetting issue with the 400/6.8 I'm keeping the Novoflex too.

See my first and last pic of post #34 : same subject, same setup (V lens with Novoflex LEM/VIS), same exposure, both wide open... 560 seems to vignette even a bit more... tonight I searched for some of my old NEGATIVES taken with those lenses (Visoflex on M4) just for curios... the vignetting was there, the print typically cut out it the for the enlargement which didn't keep the 2:3 ratio (18x24 or 20x25... probably the lab made things so that the "black corner" went out of the printed area)

As a reference point another shot with the Telyt-R.

Test 1: Sony A7R + Novoflex R-E + Telyt-R 400/6.8. Normal optical vignetting. Can easily be corrected in post-processing.

The following images were all taken with the Telyt-V, it's a little shorter than the other version.

Test 2: Sony A7R + Kipon V-E + Telyt-V 400/6.8. It shows a tad more vignetting.

Test 3: Sony A7R + Novoflex R-E + 14167 + Telyt-V 400/6.8. It shows even more vignetting.

Test 4: Sony A7R + Novoflex M-E + Visoflex III + Telyt-V 400/6.8. It shows pretty bad vignetting.

Test 5: Leica M9 + Visoflex III + Telyt-V 400/6.8. A bit of an improvement relative to Test 4, but still pretty bad vignetting.

Test 6: Nikon D800E + Fotodiox V-F + Telyt-V 400/6.8. Vignetting seems comparable to Test 2.

So, in summary I find the following:

First - best if one has the Telyt-R.

Test 1: Sony A7R + Novoflex R-E + Telyt-R 400/6.8

Second - best if one has the Telyt-V.

There seem to be two comparable options, namely.

Test 2: Sony A7R + Kipon V-E + Telyt-V 400/6.8.

Test 6: Nikon D800E + Fotodiox V-F + Telyt-V 400/6.8.

Third.

Test 3: Sony A7R + Novoflex R-E + 14167 + Telyt-V 400/6.8.

Forth.

Test 5: Leica M9 + Visoflex III + Telyt-V 400/6.8.

Fifth and worst.

Test 4: Sony A7R + Novoflex M-E + Visoflex III + Telyt-V 400/6.8.

I tend to make up my own acronyms for adapters.

Here are the actual engraved names.

14167 ................ LEICA 14167

Fotodiox V-F ..... LEICA M-AI

Kipon V-E ......... KIPON VISO-NEX

Leica R-M ......... LEICA R-ADAPTER-M 14642

Novoflex M-E ... NOVOFLEX NEX/LEM

Novoflex R-E .... NOVOFLEX NEX/LER

Novoflex R-M ... NOVOFLEX LEM/LER
