Leica 18710 case question

Good evening,

I been looking for an answer but haven't found one yet, so I wonder if any 18710 case owner could tell me if this case can be use only as a half-case? I don't want to use the top part, at least not while using the camera. I see the ever-ready case for the X2 cannot be separated, so I rather double check before geting one. I rather have another case but only this work with the grip.

Kind regards,

Ricardo

Ricardo, I have the 18710 case which was a compensatory gift from Leica UK due to unexpectedly long delay at initial launch of the camera. You can use the half-case, even with the hand-grip fitted and it makes for a well-protected easily usable combination. The EVF, however, has to be removed if the full case is closed and the EVF is placed in a neat leather case which can attach to the strap. That works well when carrying away for travel before removing the front cover for daily use.

David, thanks for your answer, glad to know it works... but, I see there is a very big screw on the bottom, with that attached, can the camera stay stand? Do you still use your X1? Regards, Ricardo

Ricardo, the screw secures camera into the body part of the case and also grips the rest of the case when that is in use. When the front is discarded, I'm afraid the retaining screw does protrude slightly but it has never worried me. Since I bought my X Vario, both cameras live inside a Samsonite camera case snugly. So the X1 just has a wrist strap for security when it is in use. That allows me to withdraw either camera quickly, the X1 living in my right hand until it is stowed back in the joint case.

From this you will see that my X1 is in constant use, often going out alone in my pocket. From first impressions of reviews and specification, I cannot see the new X Typ.113 doing this with such ease. The newer camera would have to live on a neck strap. Hence I have not rushed into upgrading the X1. Possibly I never will unless it should ever fail me. It is a simply superb little camera, used with care and thought.

Thank you David, I am enjoying mine too, unfortunately I suffer from GAS and I spend too much time investigating what is new and what do I want next instead on focus on the basics; going out and take pictures with my current gear. Maybe I will get the grip without case and use it that way. Cheers! R
