After the discovery of oil in the then "French" Algeria in 1956 (see my thread "Historical well"), frenetic drilling and exploitation began all over the desert part of the territory. And an incredible pollution followed : spilled oil - in Hassi Messaoud - and gas - in Hassi R'Mel - were simply burned 24 hour a day for years, covering large parts of this until then untouched nature with heavy dark smoke. I must confess that when I discovered and photographed all that in 1960, I was unaware of the potential ecological disaster, and only shocked by the visual harm. Fortunately enough, consciousness has developed in half a century ! Welcome, dear visitor!
