rob_w Posted January 3, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 3, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am having trouble getting focus assist to work as described in the manual (p. 177 in English version): For occasional use: Press the focus button (3). The monitor image shows – the enlarged detail– the setting dial symbol with the possible enlargement / reduction directions– the current zoom factor. You can change the zoom factor using the setting dial - either 5x or 10x. Use the focusing ring on the lens (14) to focus on the desired subject details. When I press the focus assist button none of this happens -- nothing happens. In the menu I have focus assist set to Manual rather than Automatic. If I set it to Automatic the enlargement occurs as soon as I turn the lens to begin focusing. If I set it to Manual no enlargement occurs, whether or not I press the front button. I would rather just turn on enlargement when needed, since it is not often needed, by pressing the button as described in the manual. I know enlargement works; I know the front button works because it can be used to set exposure compensation in conjunction with the wheel. What am I missing? Thanks
Advertisement Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Hi rob_w, Take a look here Focus assist question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
keithlaban.co.uk Posted January 3, 2015 Share #2 Posted January 3, 2015 Probably a stupid question, but are you using the thumbwheel to select the magnification that you require rather than leaving it at 1X?
rob_w Posted January 4, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted January 4, 2015 Thanks Keith. Not a stupid question at all. I am sure I am doing something wrong, just cannot see what. The setting dial symbol does not appear when I press the front button. If I hold the button and turn the setting dial anyway, it varies the exposure compensation not the enlargement. NB I have the enlargement set to 5x in the menu. Any other thoughts gratefully appreciated!
keithlaban.co.uk Posted January 4, 2015 Share #4 Posted January 4, 2015 Hi Robert, I can't find any option in my menu ( firmware = 2.0.1.5) to set the enlargement. Could the problem be you're using older firmware?
pop Posted January 4, 2015 Share #5 Posted January 4, 2015 I have just tried that with mine. I have found two ways of reproducing the misbehavior you describe: One is by pressing the front button too long (or, perhaps, too briefly). Pressing it for about one second but not longer seems to work every time. Another one is (pardon me, happened to me in the field) by pressing the other button in front, the one which causes the lens to fall off. After pressing the focus assist button (briefly) I see close to the top right corner the magnification indicator. Turning the thumb wheel changes the exposure correction in any event, whether I press the (correct) front button or not, as long as the focus assist is not active. DTM Posted January 4, 2015 Share #6 Posted January 4, 2015 Try pressing and releasing the button, not holding it. I tested mine and when I press the focus assist button the magnification appears in live view where I left it (1x. 5x, or 10x). The magnification changes when I turn the dial. When I hold the button and turn the dial the exposure compensation changes. My Focus Assist setting is Manual also.

Been there done that

keithlaban.co.uk Posted January 5, 2015 Share #9 Posted January 5, 2015 As Pop has said, press the focus assist button but do not hold down. That said, I still think this could be related to firmware version. I have focus assist set to manual. Pressing the button briefly brings up the magnification indicator. Magnification can then be selected with the thumbwheel.
jaapv Posted January 5, 2015 Share #10 Posted January 5, 2015 No, it has always worked this way. I agree that the problem of the OP arises from not releasing the button. I think personally that automatic is a lot more practical. After all one can always return to full view by tapping the shutter button.

I agree, unless you use uncoupled lenses or focus by moving the camera instead of fiddling with the lens.
keithlaban.co.uk Posted January 5, 2015 Share #12 Posted January 5, 2015 What's confusing me is the OP has said he has enlargement set to 5x in the menu. I can't see that option.
jaapv Posted January 5, 2015 Share #13 Posted January 5, 2015 The enlargement is set by the thumbwheel.
keithlaban.co.uk Posted January 5, 2015 Share #14 Posted January 5, 2015 The enlargement is set by the thumbwheel. Agreed, but the OP has said and I quote NB I have the enlargement set to 5x in the menu, which led me to suspect we weren't using the same firmware. I had a vague recollection that the older firmware allowed this but admit it could just be a senior moment
jaapv Posted January 5, 2015 Share #15 Posted January 5, 2015 Possibly, mine is from the 2nd batch.

I knew it would be something simple and I would look a complete dunderhead if I posted the question ... but there you are. At least I have an answer. And thanks to everyone who took the time to think about it and reply. (Love this forum!)
lanetomlane Posted January 5, 2015 Share #17 Posted January 5, 2015 I had the same problem when I originally got the M; I was holding the button in for too long. Regards, Tom

rob_w Posted January 5, 2015 Author Share #19 Posted January 5, 2015 By way of further explanation, I was expecting that enlargement would only occur while you held the button down and would disappear once the button was released. That's what I thought 'Manual' meant. In fact I would prefer it did work this way. I don't always need enlargement other than the odd occasion I am struggling with critical focusing. I don't want the enlargement to jump in every time I nudge the focus ring -- I find it quite disconcerting. BTW Keith I was incorrect when I said I had x5 set in the Menu -- I remembered I had set it somewhere when testing Automatic, but obviously not where. I just wanted to re-assure it was not set to x1 and therefore no enlargement. I do have the latest firmware. Thanks again everyone for your help. If you set focus assist to manual it will only jump in when you press the focus button. Turning the lens focus ring won't activate it.
