bcorton Posted January 1, 2015 Share #1  Posted January 1, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All, I've never been to Scandinavia, but am planning a trip. I'd like to keep the photo kit light, but also know that I'll be wanting wide angles for Norway's fjords. Would an X2 suffice? Or would I be kicking myself for not bringing the M6 or R9 (which gives me 21mm w/ film; 29mm with the DMR—and so much for "light"). What lenses or kit do you folks who have seen and conquered recommend?  Thanks, Brent  P.S., This is not a cruise ship visit. We'll be on trains and rented cars, most likely. So most shots will not be oceanside views of the fjords.
Advertisement Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Hi bcorton, Take a look here X2 for Norway????. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 1, 2015 Share #2  Posted January 1, 2015 The X2 is an extremely capable little travel camera. I should not hesitate to take it. You will come home with fine shots of its beautiful nature and Fjords. But don’t forget the people, especially the colorful Sami (aka Lapps) and the interesting modern architecture in its towns. Just zoom with your feet. If the budget allows you could move up to an X-Vario for versatility and keep the X2 as backup.
gbealnz Posted January 2, 2015 Share #3 Â Posted January 2, 2015 Agree with Jaap. I used an X1 (nothing else, just the X1) on a Europe trip 18 months ago. Perfect. OK, there were a couple of occasions where I wished "wider" or "closer", but very few. This year we are doing it all again, and I will be taking the X1 again, oh and the new X Vario (so Jaap's advice is sound). Same battery/charger etc too, better for travel. Mr. Thompson Posted January 2, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted January 2, 2015 It's been a while. The last time I did Norway I traveled light with an Olympus XA. A X2 would be dandy.
asiafish Posted January 3, 2015 Share #5 Â Posted January 3, 2015 I'm in Hawaii with the family right now. Brought the X Vario and Nikon Df with 58/1.4G. I used the Nikon for New Years Eve (indoors, low light) and a few other late night activities, but otherwise the X Vario has been my constant companion. Â The zoom lens is great, but honestly I could have done about as well with an X2.
globalwander Posted January 9, 2015 Share #6 Â Posted January 9, 2015 The X2 is a great travel camera owing to its light weight and versatile 35mm equivalent perspective. The X-Vario will afford you a slightly wider 28mm angle that comes in handy more often than expected. Either way you'll be well served by these trusty companions. wda Posted January 9, 2015 Share #7 Â Posted January 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I thoroughly endorse all that has been written. I would not hesitate to travel with just my X1. So handy; so ever-ready; so precise; so compact. If I anticipated wanting to shoot much indoors, I would take my little Pixie tripod in my other pocket. Perfect! bcorton Posted January 10, 2015 Author Share #8 Â Posted January 10, 2015 Well I guess it's settled then; the R9/DMR stays home. Thanks to everyone for your valuable comments. Â All the best, Brent
timde Posted January 10, 2015 Share #9 Â Posted January 10, 2015 I would take a small travel zoom camera, like that new Leica/Panasonic thing that goes from 24 to 70 or the XVario (and so on). Although the landscape can be quite expansive there are times when you will want to frame a collection of buildings within a smaller landscape ... and taking a step forward or backwards is often not an option! Â The West Coast road, as it travels North though the sparsely populated areas, is a great experience.

The X-Vario has always been attractive, but I think if I were to acquire something new it would be a T or a digital M, but then I'd probably have to sell the R9 outfit to fund it. Oh the quandaries of overabundance. [emoji6]  'Best, Brent
wda Posted January 12, 2015 Share #11 Â Posted January 12, 2015 Brent, I would stick with your earlier decision. OK, you might occasionally yearn for a tele lens; but for most travel purposes 35mm equivalent is very hard to beat. Add in the sheer convenience and freedom and you will surely enjoy a relaxing tour.

Plus I already own the X2; no further expenditure is needed. My purpose in starting this thread was to try to determine if I would be sad not to have wider than the X2's 35mm equivalent lens. It appears that at least some who have been to Scandinavia don't think so. If someone convinces me otherwise, I can always take the M6 and film, which would also be relaxing in its own way. But I think the X2 it will be. Â Many thanks to all who have offered advice. Brent
aarnes Posted February 1, 2015 Share #13  Posted February 1, 2015 Welcome to Norway :-) Be aware : it´s cold and much snow here now ;-)  I´ve just bought me an X2 - for my upcoming trip to US.  If you buy the X2 - I would appreciate if you could drop a post here with a short feedback about traveling in Norway and using the X2. bcorton Posted February 2, 2015 Author Share #14 Â Posted February 2, 2015 aarnes, Â Thanks for the reply. And welcome to the States. Â My Norway trip is actually planned for the summer of 2016, and I have owned the X2 for about 2 years already. I enjoy the camera, but was just wondering if I would regret not having a wider angle lens for some of Norway's spectacular scenery. Â I would be happy to share a brief write-up after my trip. I would also be happy to share some photos of the USA made with the X2, if you are interested. Â Brent
aarnes Posted February 3, 2015 Share #15  Posted February 3, 2015 thank you , bcorton :-)  Well, alot of time to save money - Norway is expensive. VERY expensive ;-)  you will see alot of beautiful nature in Norway, and i don´t know what kind of pictures you like, my guess is that you will cover the most with 35mm, but if you have the opportunity to bring a camera with to. ex. 14 or 16mm, it wouldnt make any harm.  If you have planned your trip yet, will you post it? Would be easier for me too give you a recomandation on what kind of equipment you should have if i knew what places you are going to visit..
