When you put the camera on the table it always falls down.

you're right in that, so does my 90asph.Never bothered me. I botheres me, when wearing, that the better balanced lenses look into the sun. The sun can burn the shuttercloth, of my M6/MP's. No problem with the digital shutters of course.

:D my 90apo doesn't bother me in that sense because it falls in a less vulnerable way, only a few mm, just as the 75 lux. I keep all my lenses covered most of the time when walking in the sun, just a good habit against dust, fog, etc.

The Summitar came in various inconsistent forms. Earlier versions had an octagonal iris and were not coated. After WWII there were coated versions that still had the octagonal iris. For a brief time there were coated versions with round irises. Then they fell back into octagonal iris designs. I take it as evidence that Leica was struggling through its economic recovery.

I have Summitars from 1939 & 1948. Both have round iris, tho the 39 only stops to 12.5, and of course is uncoated. The 48 was bought new by my aunt in Germany when she was a teacher to the children of US forces. I also have a 34 Summar, which has hexagonal iris, so perhaps people confuse the early Summitar with the Summar. I had understood that the late Summitars (after 50?) changed the diaphragm in an attempt to reduce focus shift when stopped down. My 48 sample is an excellent lens.

Did not see any focusshift on my 1946 sample thus far

After testing both my 39 and 48 I agree - the very slight shift isn't enough to notice in real pictures. (and the same with my 34 Summar, which I think overall has nicer images than my 39 Summitar)

My 69 11817 has slightly more shift (best focus at 2.8), but I never noticed it in use for over 40 years until I had too much free time and started looking for such things.

My VC 35 f1.4 is known for bad focus shift, but again I used it for a couple of years of good pictures before I heard people complaining and checked it. I think we would all be happier with the lenses we already have if it weren't for the Internet!

Early into my digital Leica experience Jaap gently explained the new experience of extreme viewing. I am grateful for his help. I had no clue until I got two monster Apple monitors chained together. Then I retired to a humble laptop and wet darkroom. I am liberated!

Now I do not over perfect focus at all.

Sure it's OLD but you should never underestimate the DR Summicron.
