It's always been a fault with the M digital cameras...all of them. No separate flash output; only through the hot shoe which you might be using for a viewfinder:/

cheers Dave S :)

Everyone has suggested options which require use of the hotshoe...I'm wondering about leaving the hot shoe empty for a viewfinder.

cheers Dave S :)

And for clarity since there are three topics in one here, if you want to connect a studio or other flash unit here with simple triggering and no TTL functions, and not use the hotshoe, you need the multi function grip which has both an SCA socket and a conventional PC cord socket

Hi Geoff

Any extra grips for the M8 don't have the electricals, so cannot plug in flash. Multi function grips are not available for the M8...unfortunately :(

Hi David, then your only solution is still to buy the multifunction grip......and an M (typ 240).

But to be more serious I think you just need to accept using the hotshoe for when you want to use flash.
