M8 and the Tripod quandry

It's a Luigi soft release button. Not sure i really like it though been playing with it for about a week

You might try a soft release with a dome shaped top. You don't use your finger tip to fire, you use somewhere aroung the joint and second section of the finger depending how big your hand is and how long your finger is. No need to keep your finger scrunched up to keep it in firing position and very smooth release. I don't think there would be much benefit if you had to fire it with the finger tip in a concave tipped release, might even make things more awkward.

I find with a leveling center column and a RRS panning clamp (has a bubble level on the clamp) with an L plate on the camera I can omit the head alltogether. For 90% of what I shoot it provides enough range of motion. I believe the Gitzo leveling column has a much lower profile then my Berelbach making for an even more stable setup.

Nice setup, Guy. But when you start thinking LONG lenses again, (se below)

will your new Tripods hack it?

Well that BH-55 that i sold you will certainly handle the big stuff, the BH-40 could probably do a 300mm.

BTW that BH-55 will almost handle a human it is that strong

I had an Abrahamsson Softie which I liked. I was having a problem with my M8 batteries running down all by themselves. I lost the Softie (it dropped off in the street, unnoticed by me). Suddenly my battery problem disappeared. I can only assume that if the shutter is depressed when you put the M8 in a bag before it has totally shut itself down, the battery runs itself down. Obviously it is much easier to have the shutter depressed if you have a Softie mounted. Just a theory but seems logical - may however have been a coincidence as I also reloaded the firmware.

On the tripod front I am using two Manfrottos. A big 190 + 141 RC head when needed and a little Modo 785SHB when I want something pretty portable. Sadly they don't use the same QR plate so I keep one or other on my non-handle base cover. For those occasions when I have neither tripod with me I have a mini Sony tripod that can still cope with the Elmarit 90 and fits in the front pocket of my Billingham M.

Yes the softie as it sticks out will fire the shutter when placed in a bag. It will also be waking up the camera if not off as it bumps against the wall of the bag.

I probably will take it off pretty soon here , I agree maybe the concave would have been better. Don't know unless you try it, it will just go in the M8 box of unused stuff. LOL

Regarding the Soft Release ....I received two from Luigi this week. Also got the Concave version ..should have got the Convex style...as with the grip ..the trigger finger can be placed along it to hit at the joint. With that said I was hand holding window light shots at 1/15 sec so I am pretty pleased with the results.

gogopix: So is that 800mm rangefinder coupled and which micro-dot framelines does it pull up? :)

...actually, it brings up the 135/560 framelines. One then estimates ONE HALF the distance of 560 (since 1.33 crop means 800 is 1100!)

...to see this, I have 16 of the 1.25 eyepieces(more xpensive than the 800mm!) stacked up (i removed for the picture since they kept hitting me in the, well, you know whats)

you see what we do for Leica 'look' :-)

actually, I focus with a R9, take off,, slip the m8 on, and bingo, the focus is spot on!!!

Guy, I don't know how you afford new stuff with the deals you offer! BH-55 is intended for a prototype 300/2 (yes, an f2, all 16lbs of 30 yr old weight) Schneider-Kreutsnach with Hasselblad mount that I will use on my contax with a Phase. How's THAT for eclectic.

and really I have some lenses, like the leica Telyt 6.8 560mm that are getting heavy with these old hands, so I will use your tabletop Leica truipod in chest support mode. (and NO I don't need it YET for the 135 Elmar!)

Yeesh, we really drive each other nuts, dont we? It must be in the leica lubricant.
