Guest Bernd Banken Posted May 11, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 11, 2007 Jan, great shot, #1 that is. But where did the "A" on the rear license plate go? Andy Jan's mistake:D In the seventies this Dino was the poor man's Ferrari. With the V6 engine produced by Fiat this car never had the "Cavallo Rampante" at it's body. But after the decades faded away the cars are now well refurbished and very high in price. Jan, the #1 pic is a very good composed and prepared "speed-pic" with minimal wipe-effect and well placed FOS (field of sharpness) Bernd

Rona!d Posted May 11, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 11, 2007 Jan, wrong environment for such a car P.S.: A DINO is a DINO and NOT a FERRARI But the V6-engine is a construction of Ferrari (of Enzos son "Dino") and had "only" been produced by FIAT because of getting larger amounts (more than 500 engines) for homologation reasons. You can also find this engine in the FIAT DINO and LANCIA STRATOS.
elansprint72 Posted May 14, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 14, 2007 I think it is a pity that this car has been fitted with a Ferrari badge too. In fact, I don't think this is a 246GT at all, I think it is the much rarer (about 150 made) alloy-bodied 206GT; this version had a 2 ltr engine, which as Ron says, was fitted to the FIAT Dino too. The larger 2.4 engine later also went into the FIAT and the Stratos. Reasons for thinking this is a 206: three-eared knock on wheels (although a very few customers retro-fitted these to 246s; door lock in side flute (although, again, at the end of production the 246 had the lock moved up to this position); reversing lights, 206 had two, 246 had one centrally. The wheelbase of the 206 was a couple of inches shorter too, although it's difficult to judge from the first shot, but that's my guess! These cars were not assembled in the Ferrari factory either (Scaglietti did that job) but the engines were. wrt the photos, it's hard not to like this fabulous subject and on occasions such as this, one has to work with whatever background there is. Guest flatfour Posted May 15, 2007 Share #11 Posted May 15, 2007 Pete - In 1973 I used to run a Dino 246 when we had the Ferrari franchise for the South West (UK). It was a great car when it was running properly which wasn't very often. In fact every time I drove to our office in Bristol I always had tro leave it in the workshop to have something fixed. Usually nothing serious, like handles falling off, lights not working, indicators u's, wipers not working, trim falling off. I changed to a Porsche 911 and discovered really reliable high performance motoring. I think Ferraris have improved a great deal since then. In those days Ferrari were all about racing with road cars a bit of an afterthought. In any case most people say the Dino 246 was not a real Ferrari - but current prices of nice ones don't agree with that.
