SVX90 Posted October 6, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) When you combine the lens and the adapter on an M240, will the Focus Aid function still be working? Sorry if this has been asked before.
Advertisement Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Hi SVX90, Take a look here (Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4) & (Macro-Adapter-M). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Exodies Posted October 7, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2014 I can't see why not. Focus is measured by examining the pixels of the sensor; these pixels are there no matter what you place in the lens socket.
Rick Posted October 7, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 7, 2014 Yes, but not the automatic function that detects when the lens is being focused and provides peaking and magnification automatically - the adaptor is not RF coupled to the camera. The old adaptor was RF coupled and in some or most instances it is more accurate to focus albeit less accurate to frame.

Rick Posted October 8, 2014 Share #5 Posted October 8, 2014 It may be an alternative and that is fine. But, under many conditions it is much more difficult to focus with EVF/LV and it doesn't improve on the focusing advantage of the RF version on the Macro Elmar. There are of course reasons this is true.

There are of course reasons this is true. Having had both old and new, I think there is some truth to this. However, in macro framing is critical and the new combination is superior to the old. The trick to me with using the EVF for focus is to do it wide open and then stop down. Not the fastest but a lot of macro work is slow, tripod work. I have never had much success with macro without a tripod because of camera movement (aka user error).

Not the fastest but a lot of macro work is slow, tripod work. I have never had much success with macro without a tripod because of camera movement (aka user error). Agree with all of this. Although, I find that some macro work is fast, not slow. Sometimes your subject is moving, flying, or crawling. The EVF with peaking gives such a wide DOF, even at f4, that I often find it difficult to get the subject in the center of the DOF. On the other hand, I struggle with the RF adaptor to get the framing accurate. My method is to use the old RF adaptor to get the focus then, pull back and look at the LCD or EVF for the framing. Often, it is the other way around; frame with LV and focus continuously with the RF. For me, the old adaptor is the best of both worlds for the Macro Elmar. It couples with the RF (unlike the new adaptor) and allows for live view as well. The new adaptor has some advantages of its own and I wish my MA would click into lock when retracted. But, don't get rid of your old adaptor. Its not dead yet.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted October 8, 2014 Share #8 Posted October 8, 2014 Why not just enable the focus aids with a press of the front button when using the new adaptor. A 90mm at f4 is easy enough to focus accurately with the EVF. Widest like the WATE are more difficult. Gordon

And the 90 Macro is easy to focus with the EVF. But, with a Macro adapter on the lens, focus becomes extremely critical and sometimes the LV, +/- Mag, +/- FP show too much DOF which in turn is not specific enough for some subjects to provide razor sharp placement of the POF which, is often needed for some macro photography.
