TommyC Posted October 5, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 5, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having used the XV since August, I'm extremely impressed by it's DNG files. The colours are as good, if not better, than the Fuji S5Pro I have used since 2007. That is saying a lot because the S5Pro is known to have unbeatable skin tone. I'm think of adding a smaller Leica that has similar output. From my research, the X2 shouldn't be too far away. For those that have the XV and X2, do the output files look alike? Another option is the D-Lux. But I doubt it will have the XV colour.
Advertisement Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Hi TommyC, Take a look here X2 backup to XV. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted October 5, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 5, 2014 I regularly use my X1, predecessor to the X2, not as a backup camera, but as a companion. Sometimes the faster lens proves useful indoors when travelling and is certainly less obvious than the XV. The files are similar and the fixed Elmarit lens is superb. In view of its small and compact nature, I am having doubts about upgrading it to the latest Leica X without evaluative handling tests. I cannot speak for the X2, which on paper should be better but is not necessarily so, but it would be easy for you to try one at a dealer at the new lower price. Very attractive! Guest DrPix Posted October 5, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 5, 2014 I've had/used all X-Leicas. X2,Vario and X have exactly same sensor and very similar IQ. I¨d say that , pound per pound, X1 rennders best IQ. For my money X1 would be perfect back-up partner till Vario.
!Nomad64 Posted October 5, 2014 Share #4 Posted October 5, 2014 Pairing an X2 to your XV would also give you the advantage of having an integrated system, as both cameras share the same batteries, chargers and EVF. I own an X2 but not the XV. Based on the RAW files I could grab all over the web I'd say that the XV's IQ is slightly higher than X2's, most likely due to a better lens and a better software optimization. XV's outputs are almost comparable to M9's. X2's aren't and her DNGs require a bit more tweaking to produce good results. The difference is not so much but is however there to be seen when pixel-peeping. In the end it depends on how much finicky one is and what's the intended final use of the images. If you can compromise on the image quality, do not care about system integration and want to have the versatility of a zoom faster than yours you may want to wait for the new D-Lux/Panny LX100 to hit the market, check for her RAW files and eventually opt for this latter. On paper the size is practically the same of the X2 and the 4/3 sensor shouldn't be too shy of the APS-C in terms of IQ. Panny engineers already did miracles as to optimizing the D-Lux 6/LX7 files. If they can repeat themselves with the new camera it might be very tempting an option (actually I'm balancing with the idea of buying one and using it when I need the zoom and/or the faster lens and use the X2 when I want to squeeze out that extra IQ). Hope this helps Bruno
TommyC Posted October 6, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted October 6, 2014 Thank you for the responses. I have played around with X2 DNGs I could find online. They seem to produce nice files. Similar to the XV. I also like how the X2 shares battery and EVF with the XV. That means I can save a few $$ by going with the X2. Having said that, I think it only makes sense to wait for the DLux before making a decision.
dkCambridgeshire Posted October 6, 2014 Share #6 Posted October 6, 2014 Possible to buy a used X1 for half the cost of a used X2 - and an X1's image files are just as good (and some say better) than those of an X2. dunk
