Rolling Review on Leica X Typ 113

Nice, thank you, that's very helpful. I will watch for the ever ready case to become available and grab one. That sounds highly useful, and since its quick to remove I can use it without when I want to go light or carry it around my neck.

The low light performance of the 113 is excellent! As you say, night and day to the 107. I even find myself reaching for it more frequently around the house, as the fast lens allows for much lower iso than the 107. I've been very pleased with the high iso response of the 107s sensor, but in most cases you get 2 stops better with the 113 which allows for more gentle tonal variations and certainly better dynamic range. Check out some night shots here: X at night ... you can shoot in almost zero light and get excellent images.

Thanks! Great low-light shots and third instalment to the review! Ming Thein too called the camera a 'black hole' for light in his recent review, praised the t stop credentials of this lens. I am almost sold! I too use manual focus for almost all my Vario shots, so I will no doubt do the same with the 113. I imagine manual focus becomes difficult at low light, so I am wondering if Leicas new Visoflex will help things (it also adds gps)... and a higher pixel count than the built in display.

Kristian Dowling's review [http://kristiandowling.com/blog/2014/10/11/leica-x-overview-and-field-test] now makes me at least want to go out and see how the X113 feels in the hands. I was especially taken by the remark that the lens shares some of the qualities of the 35 Summilux FLE and v4 Summicron. Great pics too! I'd love to have M240 quality in a lighter weight camera…….. The review nicely complements Ming Thein's – slightly predictable? – conclusions.

Wouldn't agree Ming is predictable. He is very critical

Sorry: my comment was pretty vague. I am a huge admirer of Ming Thein's website reviews and pics. I just felt that what he'd found with the X113 we probably already knew from elsewhere – apart from his frank criticism of the corner softness with the new Summilux [sic] lens. Of course, we know he's not a fan of 35mm framing notwithstanding his admiration for the 35 1.4 Summilux FLE used with the M240.

It feels good; but loses some of the "solid" feeling of the Vario. I'm frankly quite surprised by how heavy the Vario's lens actually is (extrapolated from the difference in camera weights between the 107 and 113).

That said, it has the same (excellent, IMO) haptics, and Leica's more dense construction feels better in the hands, to me, than my XPro (which feels sort of hollow). The manual focus "feel" is lighter than the Vario, which is fine and fits the overall feel of the camera.

I have never shot the 35 FLE. I used to own a 35 'cron v4, and I can see why you might compare the 113's rendering to that lens. I think the 113's lens is a bit better in some areas, though; smoother in handling of specular highlights and edge transitions. I have not explored all aspects to come to a definitive (for me) conclusion.

If you compare it against the universe of Leica, it's quite the bargain. It's invariably not 100% of what you'd get out of a M and FLE, but is it close enough for you at 1/6th the price and a lot less weight? Let the images decide. Me, I'd like both :)

Being in Melbourne, I am very familiar with the locations that Kristian used in his sample images. It's very interesting to see how the 113 can be used in well-known surroundings.

He says that the colour is very similar to what you would get from a M camera - but which M camera does he mean? I love the way the M9 produces colour, but I understand that the M240 is rather different.

I´m NOT trying to discourage people from buying X. I LOVE Leica; I´ve been shooting with almost all Leica digicams for the last few years! My "reflections" are purely subjective, can only compare IQ of "my pics" on "my screen". Maybe the silver X I´ve tried was a lemon - highly unlikely - it´s rather my too high expectations! Many users will surely be thrilled and I´ll be crucified:). On my X "sharpness" became acceptable from f/4, quite good-very good on f/5.6 and f/8, not improving on f/11 (dof vs diffraction). AWB is not very best/accurate (as mentioned) still, the camera renders very nice images but the "spark" from XVario images was missing! If only Leica could come up with a Visoflex for XVario! As someone said - XVario is a M-class camera with some very high quality M-class lenses in ONE body! Perhaps not for "bookeh/speed" enthusiasts.. but for "the rest":p.

My X 113 delivers more than enough IQ wide open... "Acceptable at f4"? LOL

Loplop: Do we get another update to your rolling review in the near future or do we have to wait for 6 month marker? I'm not a big review guy, but personal use experiences I definitely like to read.. Your articles seem to be written in a nice, down to earth manner which I like.

Thanks for the articles so far,

Juha

And what does THIS sample image prove? Enough IQ? This could be taken with any modern smartphone:)
