CalArts 99 Posted November 1, 2014 Share #81 Posted November 1, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) :-)! Then what do they mean by black chrome if it's a brass body? What wears away if it's not paint? "The reason why the cameras with brass top plates in black chrome get "silvery" on the edges instead of braising is because of the nature of the black chrome plating process. It is not a single black chrome plate, but rather a series of platings applied to the metal part. Since the bright chrome plating is very durable, it is rare to wear past this on the black chrome cameras. Black paint cameras on the other hand do not have these coatings and wear through to the brass rather easily." Leica FAQ — Brass vs. Zinc
Advertisement Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Hi CalArts 99, Take a look here Selling M7 Getting M-A?!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
NJH Posted November 1, 2014 Share #82 Posted November 1, 2014 I get the impression this finish is much more durable than that applied to the M6. Of my own cameras the M7 and M8 I had hadn't worn through anywhere, the M7 in particular looked like it had been fairly heavily used but hadn't worn through. The mint like new M6 I picked up (just a scuff on the top plate kept it from looking like a new camera) is rather disappointingly showing wear already on the rewind after maybe only 25 rolls this year, the finish has flaked or worn off. I can only imagine how battered these cameras must have looked subjected to pro use back in the day in no time at all.
pico Posted November 1, 2014 Share #83 Posted November 1, 2014 Plain chrome is the most durable. Black chrome is next, and black lacquer (or is it enamel?) is most vulnerable, but to my eyes it is attractive over brass because the finish has lustrous depth. Even the engraving appears deeper than others. I have two original black M4s from 1968. One I used professionally in news photography and it wore away to brass within two years. The rewind latch finish wore through within a week. I was not a collector, but an accumulator but I keep one 1968 black M4 with black Summicron 50mm in the box, never used, and I will never use it. Gads, I've become one of them! Funny, but lately the chrome finish Ms look better to me. With all the black models it even seems more classic. mca Posted November 1, 2014 Share #84 Posted November 1, 2014 Hello Luis, Welcome to the Forum. If you set the aperture of the lens on an M6 or MP before activating the meter: When you do meter: The meter will operate Aperture Priority. Best Regards, Michael Thank you Michael, I've been around for maybe 3 years but I am an awful writer so I haven't commented much in the past. But I will in the future as it's always interesting to learn from all of you and share my ideas. Yes that could be close to Aperture Priority but you'd still have to go and adjust speed until the meter was spot on. Usually when I use the M6 I do the opposite, I set the speed first, according to what I think the light is and then fine tune in the aperture ring, thus it's closer to Speed Priority even though it's actually still Manual But I meant the M7 actually has Aperture Priority where it sets the speed automatically like on the M9. In terms of the shooting experience I think it's the best, but of course for some reason people prefer mechanical cameras and the M3, M4, M6 and MP are still the favorites

bruniroquai Posted November 7, 2014 Share #90 Posted November 7, 2014 I'm considering buy a M-A but I'm scared about the use of it without meter. I want to buy and open, and use it for the first time... but now is the question, M-A or MP? Make it mine... forever, maybe with the new Summarit 35. madNbad Posted November 7, 2014 Share #91 Posted November 7, 2014 For a fraction of the cost of either a M-A or an MP try an M2 for a while. If you find you can not live without a buit in meter then the decision is easier. Plus you can always sell the M2.
MarkP Posted November 7, 2014 Share #92 Posted November 7, 2014 You don't have to buy an old meter-less beater to sort this out. Just use ANY camera you have and ignore the meter.
erl Posted November 7, 2014 Share #93 Posted November 7, 2014 Even remove the battery to resist the temptation to use the meter! Sometimes logic is very simple.
