I have vivid recollections as a lad aged 8 years of seeing a working agricultural steam traction engine, powering the thresher, in a farmyard in Charlton Village, Wantage in August 1955 … and a steam roller smoothing the newly surfaced road near Motspur Park Surrey railway level crossing in 1956. Threshing was a labour intensive task and extra farm workers were employed - all of whom queued for their wages when the job was done - paid by the fat farmer. Now the village has no farms following housing development. And of course the smell and sound of the steam roller working and the newly laid fragrant tarmac was something to savour.
