Leica M-A – Purely Mechanical

Leica Blog

As I can't understand Leica M-A has not battery, it is pure mechanical. At the same time it has an ISO dial. How the ISO dial connection works without any power?

It doesn't. It's there to remind you of the kind of film in the camera.

Something I hadn't noticed before, besides the fact that it is a very beautiful camera. The engraving on the chrome version and the engraving on the black chrome version are completely different. The black chrome version is similar to the Monochrom, with no "filled in" engraving anywhere on the body. The chrome version has the classic Leica engraving (which I think is nicer than the engraving on the MP).

Yes, I agree. I have the Monochrom and like it very much as a camera but I've never been particularly taken with the "stealthy" aesthetics of it as an object. A film camera for me now is more of a "personal" casual use thing and, as silly as it sounds, I prefer the smooth glossy black paint of the MP to the utilitarian greyness of black chrome for a camera of this role. If the M-A came in black paint I'd be seriously tempted to shuffle some gear and put an order in. I like everything else about it – the viewfinder simplicity of not having any metering triangles to interrupt the framelines, the 100% mechanical nature of it and the metal rather than cheap plastic dial on the rear door. I even think the price is fair (by Leica standards).

What is the consensus here about whether Leica is going to introduce a classic light meter for the M-A to fit that slot in the shutter speed dial?

Or does everyone think they just did it for aesthetic reasons?

I responded in another thread about this that I doubt very much that the slot indicates that Leica have any plans to sell a new meter. I think it is there as both a nod to the heritage of meterless M cameras and also to provide full backwards compatibility (which is one of the defining characteristics of the M system) with the old meters. Leica did the same with the meterless MP Classic that they made a few years ago – it too featured the little metering notch.

Why not just take the battery out of your MP and superglue the battery cover in place over the empty chamber, whilst beating oneself and wearing sackcloth and ashes?

Et voila, a home made M-A.

or... for those of us who use and prefer an external meter, we could actually buy a new camera with exactly the features we want!!

Just think! This world has people in it who have different thoughts and desires inside their heads than you!!! It's amazing isn't it?!

Thanks. Yes, in 53 years on this planet that concept had never, ever occurred to me. Have you ever heard of a concept called a 'sense of humour?' It's amazing how some people lack one, isn't it?

Well when you've seen the exact same 'joke' repeated in every single thread discussing the new camera, and couched in exactly the same dismissive and condescending terms, this particular concept of 'humor' tends to wear a bit thin.

In any case, you can consider my earlier response as 'irony' - ever heard of the concept? You can laugh and laugh at how funny I was.

I am sure you meant no offense; nor did I.

I should have learned long ago not to try and be flippant on

this forum. That includes, clearly, the freedom to express views, even 'humorous ones', on

Leica products, which can unintentionally offend someone.

I think the M-A is a fine product, and I salute Leica for producing it in this day and age. I have owned very many film Ms over the years and still own an M2 and MP.

I sit here now, having a coffee in Cafe Leitz, having visited the Leitz Park in Wetzlar this morning.

I also looked at the M-A whilst here, but I'll stick with what I've got.

Each to his own!

Regards

On this Photokina Leica present in my opinion only very beautifully dust catcher for the vitrine.

I expected more.

Enjoy your treasuries.

Current premium models show well known development in Leica evolution; from catching decisive moments to catching dust.

Does anyone know if the M-A accepts the Leicavit or Abrahamsson Rapid Winder? Does it work with the original self-opening film cassettes?

If it is the same dimensions as the MP, it will take the Abrahamsson Rapid Winder, as does the M4-P.

The M-A is a very nice looking camera - yet another M camera I would like to own but will not buy, barring a thunderstorm at my house that spews gold nuggets rather than rain. :(
