dennersten Posted May 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) After 15 years with Leica M i tried a Leica II, with an uncoated Elmar 50/3.5. Please have a look http://www.hd.pp.se/gallery/v/camerarelated/leicaII/ How much could you expect from a lens like that? All are taken very sunny days. Could you point me to other galleries taken with that lens?
Advertisement Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Hi dennersten, Take a look here Foggy or uncoated. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted May 6, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 6, 2007 Here are some shots taken with different Elmar lenses. You will notice the lower contrast of the Black Scale Elmar (which is coated). http://www.leica-camera-user.com/leica-collectors-historica/19410-elmars-comparison-4-images.html How is the condition of your lens - is any haze visible when you look through the lens? Your images do look soft for an Elmar but I don't have experience of the uncoated lens.
dennersten Posted May 7, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 7, 2007 Yes it has some visible haze. Nice samples thankyou. Do you have some in black and white?
echorec Posted May 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 7, 2007 Hej Håkan, I think you should expect much better performance from this lens. It is probably foggy inside or has severe cleaning marks on the front element.

It is probably foggy inside or has severe cleaning marks on the front element. do you have a old one?..we are talking about a lens of the early 30s... I have one of the early nickle ones..and the pictures are very different.. sometimes just great and sometimes with flare problems.. Welcome, dear visitor! echorec Posted May 8, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 8, 2007 Hello Jan, I have old Elmars and an early Summar and of course they are sensitive to flare but not as bad as Håkans pictures. Your pictures are great by the way, Gunnar
dennersten Posted May 9, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted May 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks a lot for showing me the nice pictures, so i realised that i got to chase a new lens, i found a summitar on ebay which i am waiting for eagerly. A petty that the Elmar was so bad, i really like the form factor of the camera and the lens. Easy to bring along in your coat or whatever. Some more advices for a LTM beginner? earleygallery Posted May 9, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 9, 2007 Hakan, If I were you I would try to find a nice coated or preferably a red scale Elmar 3.5 - they come up on e bay regularly. The Summitar is faster of course but softer at f2 and larger/heavier. The LTM and Elmar are a perfect match. Also look at the 25mm Snapshot Skopar (Voigtlander) lens - I love using it on my lllf. echorec Posted May 9, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 9, 2007 I agree with James, the red scale coated Elmar is a beautiful lens. Try also the Summar for a more vintage look with very warm colors. That is also a great and sharp lens as long as you don´t point it against the sun or other strong light sources.
dennersten Posted May 10, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted May 10, 2007 OK great thanks ! I promise to do that. Can you give me any advices on a small light meter. I am so fed up with my Gossen meter, which is the same size as the Leica II.
brianv Posted May 11, 2007 Share #11 Posted May 11, 2007 I suspect that you will get much better results after having the haze cleaned. It was like night+day on my Summarit-M. Don't force me to post my infamous "Hello Kitty" before and after CLA shots! My 5cm Elmar is coated, and in perfect shape. These are with a 9cm F4 uncoated Elmar, Black. I've never had a problem with my uncoated lenses when using with a shade. Welcome, dear visitor!
