rami G Posted May 6, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted May 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Recently, I updated my G5 duo 2mh (4GB ram) and got the lattest MacBook Pro 17. However, the speed of processing, or even viewing DNGs from my M8 is absurdly slow, and no other operation can be performed during such a process. I never had such an issue with any other Mac I had (using PS2 etc). I wonder whether others have simillar experience? Is the C1 a PowerPC shoftware and therefore runs slow on the Intel? Any advince would be appreciated. I hope it is OK I am posting the question here. I am talking about the C1 which I received with my M8. Thanks. Advertisement Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Hi rami G, Take a look here C1 LE on MacBook pro. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gwelland Posted May 6, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted May 6, 2007 I have the MacBook Pro 17 with 3GB ram running C1 LE and it's very fast rendering images. You must have some other issue with your MacBook Pro if it's running very slow with C1. Initial loading of a directory takes a few seconds the first time through to render the RAW files but selecting any DNG renders in less than a second. Â Do you have a decent amount of RAM in the MacBook Pro? I would recommend loading it to the max for image work as this makes a hge difference. wlaidlaw Posted May 6, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted May 6, 2007 Thanks Graham. I have 2gb Ram. I will try to add the third gb. When I am travelling I convert my DNG's on a 1.4Ghz G4 iBook with only 768 Mb of RAM (its maximum) and I don't get the problems you are getting. Sure it's not too fast compared with my dual 2.3 Powermac (2Gb) or 2.1 Intel core2 duo iMac (1.5Gb) but it would convert 1 photo about every 30 secs and will run mail, Firefox, etc while doing so. Have you corrected permissions, defragged and run maintenance scripts recently? Â Wilson
gwelland Posted May 6, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted May 6, 2007 I agree - there must be something else going on here because 2GB of RAM should be adequate for C1. Is the problem with speed due to loading images via the USB connection to the camera, to a card reader or just loading images already on the machine? Â I don't generally load the images direct from the camera but even when I have configured this it was acceptable in terms of speed. Â SD card readers need to be USB2 at a minimum otherwise it will take a while to copy files over. I use an Epson P-4000 and this copies across files via USB2 ok. USB 1.1 mode would be a LOT slower. Â If loading images from a directory into C1 is slow then I'd suspect that something is either wrong with the environment or with the C1 LE install. This is fast on both PowerPC and Intel laptops (I've used it on G4 15in & MacBook Pro 17in and both were fast).

I always copy my DNG's to an archive directory in my iBook and thence to my external HD, when I get home. I run C1LE capturing from the archive directory rather than the SD card. I have no reason really to do this, as I had not noticed it being slower, when I used to capture direct from the card. C1 when I first used it, seemed to have a bit of difficulty locating the SD card but appears to have learned where it is. However, as I got into the habit of archiving my DNG's anyway, it just seemed the sensible way to work rather than direct from the card reader.  Wilson
rami G Posted May 6, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted May 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks all. So there does seem to be something wrong with my machine. It does indeed behaves slower even than my old G4 powerbook (1.67). I will try to fix permissions and to see if that would help. I will also try reinstalling C1. Â I upload all the photos to a dedicated folder and then when I choose the folder with C1 it takes a very long time untill they are all uploaded, and they are never all have preview together (folder is of 2gb or smaller depending on card). Â Thanks.

wlaidlaw Posted May 6, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted May 6, 2007 Rami, Â As an additional bonus iDefrag will defrag an iPod, which can make old ones run much better. My daughter has a series one that was misbehaving after a new battery was fitted and iDefrag cured it. Â Wilson

gwelland Posted May 6, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted May 6, 2007 If you want to run the maintenance scripts you need to run terminal and type the following commands from the prompt (You'll need your admin password): Â sudo periodic daily {you'll be prompted for the admin password} Â sudo periodic weekly sudo periodic monthly
