However having bought a couple of pricey, even by Leica standards, lenses with very short hoods and very large front elements (24 and 30/90) I am looking at buying a UV filter for times when I feel it is needed.... John McMaster Posted September 4, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted September 4, 2014 For times when I am near water/dust, none of the longer S lenses need a filter (I have used my 120mm in heavy rain) due to long hood, and I use the S2 as an everyday camera at times rather than tripod mounted and feel a bit fearful ;-) The filter would only be fitted if required, not permanently mounted... john Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
albireo_double Posted September 5, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 5, 2014 I use the Heliopan 95mm UV filter on the 30-90 zoom. It is meaningfully cheaper than the Zeiss / B+W alternatives, in my view the same quality (Schott glass, MRC coating) and the mount is the slim variety, therefore producing no vignettting, even at the wide end of the zoom. I don't use UV filters as protection on my other S lenses; I make the exception with the zoom as the hood is quite shallow and the front element is large. The only disadvantage of the slim filter is that the lens cap does not hold very securely on it - I don't use it and leave the lens in the bag without it.
