This is an interesting situation that I have gone through as well.

For years (25+) I have used Nikon SLR's and currently have a D800 (non e), which is a phenomenal image making machine. I have used it for macro, landscape and school sports days and capturing my sons' dinghy sailing. Whilst it has been very competent, I haven't experienced much "joy" in the process of making/capturing those images.

A few years ago I bought a 50mm summicron and a voigtlander R2 and started to get used to the rangefinder experience and leica m lenses. I loved it!

Recently I bought an M240 and have now added a number of leica lenses. I am now finding myself taking out the M240 with 21,35, 50 and 90 mm lenses instead of the Nikon, which has hardly been used this year at all. The M240 has gone on holiday with me and the family, whilst the Nikon sat in the cupboard. I would still use the D800 for the AF capability but I "enJOY" the experience of using the M soooo much more!

Interestingly, my 11 year old son, who has a far better eye than me for an image, has borrowed (under dad's supervision) the M and loves using it. He didn't take long to get used to focussing with the rangefinder either, which is galling, to say the least!

His most telling comment was "Dad, I really love using your Leica camera the most as it makes such a lovely sound when I press the shutter button!"

No prompting was used to get this comment!

I ended up buying the 240 suppose to show up tomorrow. Selling all my Canon gear. After a total of 4 hours in the store on two separate visits I was sold. (the poor salesman who helped me though ha!)

I am thinking about getting a M 240. While M-P seems to have some useful upgrades, I am not sure I would need them. I would be perfectly happy with regular M. I have an option of getting a new M and a second hand M in very good condition from a refutable dealer. The price difference is about $900. The second one has about a year left on the warranty although I am not sure if it is transferable. The brand new one is the 100 year anniversary edition offered at the price before the September price increase. It's my understanding that the special edition is really nothing special besides the engraving. Will this somehow increase the resale value later even though it is identical to a regular M?

My view is, if you are thinking of resale value, don't buy!

Saves an awful lot of negotiation, to what end? Ending where you started!

If you buy, do it because it is what you want. Not what a future person wants.

That way, the calculation is done to satisfaction before you spend. End of argument.

No one else to satisfy.

Leica warranties in Europe are completely transferable

I presume they are all over the world but check with you nearest official Leica shop

I wouldn't count on the 100 year edition making any difference in price

I ended up buying the 240
Wonderful! I'm sure, based on your earlier postings, that you'll love the camera and system.
Selling all my Canon gear
Not so sure about that. While I love my RF cameras...

there are photos I want to take that they're entirely unsuited to...

  • 1 month later...
While at with my wife we stumbled on a Leica Store (actually I knew it was there ha!) but I spent a few hours in the store with one of the salesmen.

I currently shoot a 6D with 24-70 MK II and 70-200 MK II. Not the lightest setup there is and a bit heavy when using all day.

I mainly shoot

-Travel

-Landscapes

-Astro (hardly ever really but would like to)

-Family snap shots

My goals

-bring my camera anywhere

-lighten the load so easier to carry

-not be embarrassed to pull out in tight crowds (this happens with travel, hard to pull out that camera with a 70-200 on it and not get stares)

-Enjoy photography (sometimes my 6D feels more like work then play) I enjoy photography but lately have been leaving my camera at home because its a lot to carry around.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has made the move from FF with lenses to the Leica M system and looking for your input. I figured this would be the pace to ask.

I'm going to say Leica is probably not the camera for you..Look at the Fuji XT-1 would suit you much better..Small, light, Autofocus, while no FF, APC sensor is good, Fuji has some nice lenses as well..
