amorteguy Posted May 5, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Am I just way to picky? I want to get a new Leica (I have a great old M3 in fabulous shape.) But, I won't get a black body. I personally don't like the black Leicas. The problem is that I would absolutely have to have a 35 1.4, but they only make those in black now! What gives? With the mult-factor on the M8, the 50 1.4 just won't cut it for me. I have to have the 35. But, there is no way I am going to spend upwards of $8k and not get a body and lens that actually look like they go together. I have been trolling eBay for months and used ones are about impossible to find. What is Leica thinking in not offering matching lens for their new M8? I know I'm picky, but for $8k I have the right to be, and I WILL be.
Advertisement Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Hi amorteguy, Take a look here Summilux 35 1.4 ASPH. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted May 5, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 5, 2007 Well then I guess you won't be buying a M8 or a 35/1.4 lens.

Eoin Posted May 5, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2007 I have a chrome 35 1.4 Asph and I see them for sale on ebay all the time, I'm guessing that the euro price is putting you off but that's the market for them over here. SH Photo have a coded 35 1.4 Asph on their site right now and I have dealt with them a few times and always found them excellent. here is the link.... Leica M-Lens 1,4/35mm Summilux-M ASPH. Silvern 11 883 6-bit - SH photo Go get it, it's a fantastic lens, I will at some stage in the near future trade out my 35 for a 28, the 35 is a little too tight sometimes in the FOV but other than that I'm very very happy with the quality if the images it renders. ericperlberg Posted May 5, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 5, 2007 popflash. oops, gone... not impossible to find though, google for Leica second hand leica dealers. They don't have to be in the US. There is an international market. Stick to reputable dealers and you can order from anywhere on the planet.

lars_bergquist Posted May 6, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 6, 2007 dont they make the pre-asph lux in silver ? If you can find one – but that lens was a dog. I know, I owned one. But we have been using black lenses on silver bodies since the late 1960's, and they look perfectly appropriate. Don't engage in a craft if the looks of your tools is more important than the work you are doing. The old man from the Age of the M4
amorteguy Posted May 6, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted May 6, 2007 Thanks for the links! I have been watching eBay and KEH and haven't seen any for months. I still can't comprehend why Leica would discontinue this lens right after (before?) releasing the M8. The 35 seems to be a mandatory lens considering the multiplication factor with the M8. amorteguy Posted May 6, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted May 6, 2007 I sympathise ... Look what happened to Nicole and Tom Cruise.... just didn't match..... Well at least Tom and Nicole looked good together. A silver Leica with a black lens looks ridiculous!
amorteguy Posted May 6, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted May 6, 2007 Well then I guess you won't be buying a M8 or a 35/1.4 lens. Exactly. Unless I can get my hands on a matching body and lens. Which is why I think Leica's decision to discontinue this lens at the exact moment they release a camera that requires the lens (in order to shoot at a focal length approximating the 50mm to the M7) a bad one. I am resisting calling this a stupid decision since I don't know all the factors that went into this decision, but I can't fathom why they did it. rob_x2004 Posted May 6, 2007 Share #17 Posted May 6, 2007 You might hasve got hung up on the shortages of lenses round october november december when stuff was being barcoded. Maybe there are more about now. Best look might still be silver lens on a black body...quirky cool:cool:.

amorteguy Posted May 7, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted May 7, 2007 Jamie--could that be because there's a loose rumor that the chrome lenses are better? --HC Ok, I am a perfectionist in many ways. I admit it. (I don't apologize for it.) I'm not saying the silver is better, and I am not saying the images would be any better. I just don't like black Leicas and I think a black lens on a silver Leica looks stupid. It's my silly opinion, and I am entitiled. I think even more so considering the money I would be shelling out. For that matter, I wouldn't buy a black car when I am wanting a red one, even if it drives just as well. Keep in mind, I am not saying they should create something out of thin air to satisfy my whims. They were already making this lens! I just can't fathom why they would cease production when they release the new Leica which needs this lens! And so far, no comments have been given on that point.
