I replaced the stepped adapter with one of the new type with no step. It works perfectly. there is no effect when shining a bright lamp directly at the side of the lens where the IR detectors are located. When turning on, the WATE drop down menu shows up, 16mm is then selected and it stays selected, even after shutting off and turning on.

I suggest that anyone using the Heliar with a self-coded Leica LTM adapter (which has the step) try the bright lamp test to see if you are getting a light leak. The symptom is that the WATE menu will show up with the default of 18mm highlighted or that your next picture will show unknown in the info with no correction having been applied. This could also affect the correct reading of coding for other lenses, best seen by checking the Info.

I suspect such light leaking may have been contributing to reports of erratic coding results

I am using Tippex (in one of those easy apply pens) in the screws of my two Zeiss lenses (21 and 35) and have not problems coding them since. The 21mm, since I changed the bayonet flange to a 28mm now brings up the the WATE menu every time, without fiddling with the frame lever. I like others now know that you need to bring up the 28/90 frame lines to get a lens to show up as a WATE.

With my CV 15mm I have tried a number of ways to impliment coding with the cut out adapter (building up with Dymo tapes etc).

The problems reported here always occur due to light seeping in, especially in sunny conditions - i.e. out of the blue the M8 's LCD will light up offering the 16/18/21 option.

I have bitten the bullet and ordered a 9cm adapter from John, which I assume is light tight :) If it wasn't for his adapter, I'd be pulling my hair out over this...
