I was a little surprised when I checked the US retailers earlier today and saw that the M-P was actually in stock. I placed my order and crafted my ebay listing to sell my M240. My new M-P arrives next Wednesday.

I was expecting that the first batch would all be spoken for and I'd have to wait one year to receive the new camera. Leica either delivered an appropriate supply to the authorized resellers this time... OR I was the only one who actually sees value in the M-P. :)

Apparently Leica took a new approach this time by having stock already delivered to dealers concurrent with the product announcement. Kinda makes me wonder why...perhaps announcements at Photokina will explain.

I can definitely see the value in the M-P over the M240, in fact had Leica done the opposite...made the M240 with the M-P's features and then offered an "ME"240 with the deletion of the bigger buffer, sapphire screen and preview lever for $1000 less, I think most people would have felt it was not enough of a price differential to entice them.

That said, given that one would probably get around $5K for a used M240, then spend $8K on the P, it then becomes a $3000 differential, which some people might have a harder time finding the value in.

The M240 is the best Leica product, in fact camera, I have ever used

Whether original or P makes little difference. I would still mark my taste as the red dot in a black body, I am not into extreme minimalist, and felt the MM (which I used to have), went a bit far although in a manner synergistic with its colour blindness.

I never used the frame lever on the M9 or former Ms and I find the 240 extremely rapid to use.

Seems to me that $1000 more for the new features is too much and people are not buying.

Therefore, the obsolete M 240 is going up $300 in September.

You guys should wait until September before buying an M-P, so you will only pay $700 more instead of $1000. Thanks Leica ! ;)

This is on purpose.

Leica knows that lots of people with deep pockets will buy twice.

See also Ken Rockwell's definition of "Leicaman" :D

What we don't know is whether more money will come in as a result of some M users buying the P now, than would come in if, from the very outset a couple of years ago, a P version had been available at, say, a 10% higher price than the "standard" M.

My guess is on the latter possibility, but is is a guess, obviously.

Leica could have done that, as all "new" features are not actually new at all.

  • Sapphire screen ? Seen that.
  • Frame lever ? Seen that.
  • 2 GB mem ? Chips have been available for years.

But they didn't do that.

Leica is following a proven marketing strategy that has worked in the past.

Quousque tandem Catilina abutere patientia nostra?

Leica is joking with us...

Leica Marketing policy :

Leica Mark1 - forget something you know that Leicists love or put something they hate

Leica Mark2 - put again what Leicists like and remove what they hate

while upgrading from 1 to 2 please add 1.000 $ ....

and if you're realizing that M were decreasing in price ( new or used)

if you want sell your old car you have at least to wash it and put or remove one sticker...

I'm still waiting for the real and deserving successors of my M9-p and MM...

For other kind of pictures I use Nikon D810...

[...] But probably my main reason for finding long lens sports photography a bit artless [...] It's like a cardboard cut-out. [...]

Some editors agree with you. Below is a Pulitzer winning sports photo by newspaper photographer Hal Stoelzle.

The reproduction is poor, but the original photo is fine.

The subject was sports photography.

The photographer referred to was a news and sports photographer for fifty years. Three Pulitzers. Very much of his work was 'art'.

I wish I had permission to post some his remarkable behind-the-game and off-job work.

Considering how half the forum went crazy about the naming of the M10 as the M and then it became known as the grossly inelegant part no. M-(240) to be commonly known as the M240 can somebody please finally answer my question, what is the official name of this new camera but old camera?

It's like the iphone 6 coming out with a new name, the iPhone I-(240)-S

A bit nonsensical actually?

So please pray tell what is the new name?
