Time required on 6-bit coding on Leica lenses

Can someone share their experience on how long it is taking Leica to do the 6-bit coding on current Leica lens. I sent mine in, to Leica in New Jersey, about six weeks ago and have not yet had it returned. Your comments will be appreciated. Jim

I don't know about Leica NJ but I had three lenses (28 'cron, 35 'lux and 50 ASPH) coded by Leica in Solms during late February. I dropped them off at the Leica UK office who had to send them on to Germany. I had the lenses back within a very reasonable two weeks or so. My understanding is that Leica UK are now able to do many of the lenses in-house and the turnaround time has dropped to around ten minutes per lens!

40 minutes in my case - but I did take them to Leica personally and they kindly offered to do them while I waited. What Leica UK told me was that turn around for lenses that could be done in the UK was usually 10 days - I assume 10 working days, lenses that have to go back to Solms take 4-5 weeks due to the back log.

It took Leica NJ approximately 5 weeks to do two lenses of mine in March/April. You can call them at the 800 number and ask for the status. They will call back with the status if you have to leave a message.

I had two lenses done via the dealer where I bought the M8, but if Leica will accept them directly from the customer, I'd like to get one more lens done this way. Is it OK to send a lens to Solms? If so, what's the procedure?

David, I don't know about sending directly back to Solms

In my case I rang Leica UK because I pass their offices every Monday morning. It seemed sensible to see if I could drop them off rather than send them by courier or via a dealer. So I rang them, asked about the turn around time and arranged to drop them off this Monday.

I'm sure they did them while I waited because it was not only the beginning of the week, but it was before 10am so the engineer may not have started that days batch of lenses.

I left the lenses that have to go back to Solms at the office in Milton Keynes, Leica will send them back to Germany for me.

My first two (28 Cron and 21 Elmarit) took exactly 3 weeks door to door from Calif to Leica NJ. My third one (75 Lux) is coming back today, exactly one month after I sent it.

No complaints from me. Maybe it depends on the type of lens?

My 28 Summicron took 12 weeks, 75'cron and 50 'lux took 7 weeks. my 90mm Macro Elmarit and adapter have been away 3 weeks and still waiting. All sent by Milton Keyners on to Solms. Have had a 39 and a 46 filter through same channel but still waiting for free ones. Curiously. my discounted WATE arrived unheralded after 4 weeks despite estimate of several months. It all seems unmpredictable.

I'm not sure what the turnaround time should be but the time needed for having lenses coded is one of the reasons I'm pushing for the lens menu feature.

Cheers,

Sean

I think we should create a "petition online" push Leica to offer the lenses selection menu in the next firmware update.

They afraid that it makes M8 more complicated, but let tell them if M8 users are able to do DNG workflow, choosing lenses in simple menu will be peanuts.

If they afraid user forget to choose the new lens after changing the lens, the firmware can set to default no lens detector every time we change the lens. So there is a custom of choosing the menu after changing it.

I shipped my 28 cron for 6 bit coding on March 29 [overnight UPS to New Jersey] along with an M6 for a clean, lube and adjust. Received both back today via two day shipping, five weeks by my count. Originally they predicted that the camera would take a couple of weeks more but they were responsive to my calling them and begging to get both camera and lens back at the same time. No prior notice was sent to let me know the package was on its way.
